Photography question

How does one go about connecting his camera video output to a larger monitor while shooting coin pics? also, is there special software required? For info, I have a Nikon D40X with a 105 macro lens and want to hook it up to a 15"X12" Monitor.

For Nikon Camera Control Pro should do the trick.

I don't use it yet (I was waiting for the D7000 update to come out) but some people use ControlMyNikon. I have Camera Control Pro 2 and use it on my D5000 and D7000 but supposedly CMN is more functional than CCP2 and it's also a whole lot cheaper! Here is the link:

9.95 ... Makes me wish I had evaluated this one before springing for CCP2

I'll give this program a download and evaluate it this weekend because it looks like the liveview might be better than CCP2 from the video I am watching.

Why do you need any software at all. I connect either of my cameras with a cable directly to a USB port and then open "My Computer" and select either the Sony or Canon icon that will appear in the list, and then view the pictures with my Windows proprietary viewer. I have never had any software installed that was not more trouble than it was worth. JMO.

Jim, for viewing pictures that you have already taken you are right. Always better to just use windows and view the files that way.

But live view is a different thing -- it basically puts the viewfinder of your camera on the computer screen (in real time) so that you can see what you are shooting without having to look through a viewfinder or lcd on the camera.

I don't believe the D40x is capable of live real time viewing with any software.

As above, does the D40x have liveview??

I wasnt thinking liveview as I am fairly sure the d40x does not offer it but just as a means of shooting and then seeing the image.

It's called "tethering" and it would be nice to have a list of cameras capable of doing it.

Tethering a Nikon

I believe some older cameras with a compatible output jack provide limited tethering for strictly viewing the image on the computer, while newer tethered cameras provide remote viewing AND remote camera adjustments. I guess the ultimate in tethering will be wireless tethering that allows you to stage the camera by a bird's nest and then go into the house to control and take the pic of moma feeding the babies!

No live view on a D40x. Use Camera Control Pro to keep your hands off the camera when shooting and to see the results. Use the viewfinder to set up the shot and focus.

Version 2.9 is available now and is said to support the D7000. I'm going to have to give this a test drive sometime, as it looks pretty nice.

double check which OS Camera Control Pro will work with. I don't believe it says specifically that Windows 7 is supported. Maybe it will work, maybe it won't.

XP and Vista are supported it looks like.

I use CCP2 on Windows 7. Works fine.
