Vintage Card "FIND" Stories

Not my personal story but I had to re-tell it.
I went to my local card shop yesterday (I think the only one left locally) and was asking him about the best vintage that had come through there since he had been in business, (he has been open for about 15 years). He said about 10 years ago an old-timer (90ish) came in with a box of various vintage intent on making a few bucks himself before he died and his kids sold it all off for nothing at a garage sale, in that box was a COMPLETE set of the 1935 National Chicle football in great condition. At the time the shop owner said that he didn't know much about the set and paid the gentleman $500 for it. He says he has never seen another 1935 National Chicle football card come through his door.
(BTW, he sold it for 5k)
Anyone else have an great "FIND" story?

<< <i>About 7 years ago i put an add in the newspaper buying vintage football baseball hockey cards for cash. After a few days i started getting some calls and one stood out. The caller said he had his garage full of cards that he had from when he was a kid till he stopped collecting 15 ears ago. He stated he just moved to my area from jersey and never had a chance to organize his garage from the move so things were just pilled up in boxes. I arrived and was shocked to see that it was true, boxes pilled up to the ceiling of cards from all years that had looked like he just opened them from packs and put in piles in boxes. I found a complete run of pack fresh topps football in binders from 1970 to 1982. Boxes of 10,000+ of 1973 to 1980 football with all wax pack wrappers and all stars included with 3 Walter Payton rookies, Bradshaw and multiple rookie cards from all years. 1000's and 1000's of baseball from 1972-1980 in sets and boxes of wax pack wrappers that he saved. A box of 1979 topps hockey with 3 pack fresh gretzky rookies. sets of hockey from 1979-1982. He was a vendor for major league baseball so he had boxes of pennants from and pins from years ago still in the orginal boxes. It was fun to hear the stories behind the stuff he had but in the end he sold the majority of the cards to me so i made out pretty good on it. >>
Great story.
The first "BIG MONEY" card I ever bought as a collector was the Gretzky rookie (big money for me was $20 back in the mid 80's), a VG copy for $25, to this day still my favorite card for that reason.
He asked me what I would give him for all of this. I told him that all I wanted was directions how to get back to I35.
Some people have all the luck.

Liquidating my collection for the 3rd and final time. Time for others to enjoy what I have enjoyed over the last several decades. Money could be put to better use.
Doug, sorry to hear about your tough times. Hope things take a turn for the better for you and your family this year.

So did the shop owner call the guy back and give him some additional money? While I understand the nuiances of owning
a store with expenses and everything, $500 to $5000 is quite a large difference!
Just asking.....
