PCGS BU designation - ATB sets

So I ordered a set of ATBs from AMPEX--says they are PCGS slabbed as BU. Correct me if you know different, but my understanding is that these were graded in a bulk submission without regard to actual grade. Therefore, they theoretically could be anywhere from MS 60-70?

Once I receive the coins, what if I wanted to send them in for an actual grade? Would I submit just under regular service or something else since they have already been graded BU?

I'm wondering what the difference is between Apmex's "BU" and AMark's "Choice BU"?

  • According to PCGS customer service, you must send them in for regular service, due to the large slab. In other words, you have to pay to have them re-slabbed along with being graded.

I asked PCGS about this at the Sacramento ANA show. They said it's exactly like sending in a coin for a regrade in the holder. Regular service ($30) each plus shipping. They added, by they way, that a special higher price for this is eventually going to happen due to the cost of the holders.
    When in doubt, don't.
  • Why bother bulk grading "BU" when Brilliant Uncirculated is not a grade so much as a marketing term? If one is going through the trouble to get a coin slabbed, why not just have it actually graded? Or, alternatively, if one is not getting it graded, why bother getting it slabbed? I could see doing so if you want something certified Genuine as proof against counterfeiting of rarities, but not with these coins.

Because bulk submitters got a bulk bargain deal for simply a "B.U." designation. Actual scores would have cost more.

APMEX's site says "BU or better." I suspect they will be like the Amarks, which were "Choice BU" and none were actually graded. Not sure of why the wording difference.
