Will your collection be memorable? Or will it fade away like others?

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,370 ✭✭✭✭
I was looking at my collection the other day, and thought to myself.....Will this collection be memorable to anyone other than me? Probably not was my first answer.

Looking at books published for amazing collections like the Norweb collection, Eliasburg etc, I thought it would be a great thing to have your collection looked at by others as something to strive for. But the coins in those collections usually cost big bucks for good reason, and every day collectors can't afford such coins.

So how can an every day collector with a limited budget make their mark on this hobby? Is it even possible? Or once we are gone, will the collections be sold and fade away in the mix with all other coins? I was thinking about having my large cent collection slabbed by PCGS, and have my last name written on the slab labels of each slab.

Thoughts? image

If your collection is memorable to you, you have done well. Agree that pretty deep pockets and a very discerning eye are required to make the big time in terms of mass recognition these days. Those with modest pockets and a discerning eye do well too, though recognition is probably to scale.

How can you make your mark? I actually looked at your complete bust half set and was impressed! there are some nice pieces there!

Yes you may never be an eliasberg... but you definitely can have as much fun as he did!

IMO, for a collection to be significant, and hence truly memorable, it has to have a good theme
and be a superb exemplar of same. It should also be photographed to the highest possible
standards. The fact that your name is on the slabs after it gets broken up won't really mean as
    much in the end analysis.

Yours and mine will, in all likelihood, fade away. However, I feel that pedigess are important to the preservation of the individual and the the coin.
In early copper I think that knowing a coin's history with famous and not-so-famous owners adds character to the coin and the hobby.

In order to get your name on slabs, you must have a complete collection in the top 5, and additionally, this us a t the discretion of PCGS. I personally have erased mediocre pedigrees from several slabs over the years.

The best way to make your collection memorable is to become extremely good at what you do and freely share with others. Several forum members' collections come to mind: Sunnywood, Coinosaurus, Dahlonega, and the late IGWT.

Ryk: are you sure? I have seen some collection names on slabs that dont ring a bell as being the top 5. Here is an example:

I prefer to keep my coins in PCGS slabs, but I know that NGC will put your name/collection name on a slab label. Though I'm sure they charge more for it.

Fade, as it should be. Our collection will never be in the same class as the Boyd, Carter, James A. Stack, or Legend Collections which some of our coins are already pedigreed to, and I believe that the coins should be attributed to those great sets/collectors.

"We are but custodians and I hope that one day others will cherish these coins as much as I have" - Not an exact quote, but one of the previous 'custodians' of our 1845 and 1851 made this comment in his bio in the auction catalog. It is well said.

By Cherrypicking Varieties that everyone has either missed or passed on because it just wasn't the popular thing to do. I have purchased a number of varieties in the past year that are either stand alone pop top or tied pop top. This to me is really cool since I do not have the bank account to compete with so many others on these boards. I'm just a poor guy.

I have a lot of coins that where given to me or inherited
and have fostered interests in my son so I hope it
doesn't go to the dogs. I could see a problem trying to keep a
    a extremely valuable collection together.

Recognition is way, way overated imo.

I have some great coins but have never given thought to a registry, much less my name on a slab.

I want to be remembered by the question....

    Did he enjoy the hobby?

I'm not seeking recognition. I'm primarily seeking control after I'm gone and
forgotten. The world of man is composed and caused by smoke and mirrors or
people would be more likely to not fight for life and the future. When people in
the future look at coins they are going to see much nicer coins from this era than
if I had never been here. They are going to have a higher opinion of us and hence
themselves than if my coins had been allowed to be lost.

I will most surely have an effect. No one will know it however. ...Probably.

Mebbe if I live long enough I can get me a pedigree. image

Has anyone here ever tried pulling together manpower and financial resources to buy great coins as a group? Like 3-4 people pulling money together to get the best possible registry set or collection or is this a partnership that's just waiting to end brutally?

Maybe someday it will stir a smidgen of a look
  • Recognition is WAY over-rated. Having said that image I don't think it takes much to make a meaningful contribution to an area you love if you have a sharp eye, are very wiling to learn and spend resources (wisely, and not necessarily $$$ mind you). I am one poor dude, but I have stuff from of my image and antique collections in two museums on two continents and in many, many books and articles, some of which I have edited and others I have written or contributed to. I set out to add knowledge to my areas of interest, make my collections remembered or "memorable" for the great convergence of taste and rarity they are image and meet great folks and have great times in the process.
    I have! image

I have always tried to buy nice coins. At least in my opinion they are nice. But, once I am gone, my coins will be gone. How many coins do you own that you know a previous owner's name? I have bought coins that I was told came from the collection of a very picky collector but never given a name. Not that I would know of them anyway. So, same with my collection. It will just be broken up and go its way.

I am trying to collect pieces that were ONCE part of memorable collections, and putting them in all in one basket. Stickney, Brand, Bowers, Eliasberg.......

Not saying it will, but it could be. Remember that time plays a huge part in all of this. If you continue to build the hobby and the knowledge associated with what you collect, share what you learn and have a discerning eye, then maybe your collection will be memorable...
