No gold, just a "$" cigarette

I saw the "Atlas Shrugged Part I" movie on opening day Friday. As I recall, there was no mention of gold, which was a significant touchstone in Ayn Rand's novel. However, there was a brief scene of someone smoking a cigarette branded with a dollar sign ($), like in the novel.

Gold will probably be used or mentioned in parts II and III, if they get made.

What did you think of Part I? The movie trailer looked pretty good. It's not showing in my smallish city, but I am contemplating a drive.

I liked it better than the "mainstream" reviewers did, especially considering the time and budget constraints getting it made. I would give it 3 stars out of 4. The movie captured several of the highlights of the first 1/3 of the novel, but also left some out. If the movie is successful, it will hopefully provide the producers with enough money to upgrade parts II and III.

The talk of gold doesn't come until FAR later in the novel. When Ragnar confronts Reardon, and then when Dagny accidentally makes it into Galt's gulch. Until those points, gold isn't mentioned hardly at all. One exception is D'Anconia's speech about money and value. There he makes mention that we accept paper value, when it should be gold, but it is just a casual mention in a speech focused on the fact that money takes the place of violence in trade.

I imagine the next part in the trilogy will be like Godfather II. Taking place in the past where the Taggart kids, Eddie, and D'anconia grew up together.

It always made me sick that Rand's death was hardly mentioned... (it fell on the same day as John Belushi.)

The movie is sure driving sales of the book - currently #4 on Amazon's best seller list. Coming at a time of rising inflation, it will likely acquaint many more people with the virtues of honest money.

I was in Detroit over the weekend, and the local paper gave the movie a fairly good review, allowing for its low budget.

The reviewer thought it pertinent to mention that he or she thought it was odd that Rand was an icon of the far Right, when she was an athiest who lived in an open marriage.

I will go to the movie and form my own opinion.
