Question re: Jordan rookie reprint

how does one detect a reprint of this card? are there distinguishing marks as with the gretzky? i am not at all familiar with this card--nor do i know how to post pictures on this site--so any input would be appreciated.

thanks in advance. eyebone

At the national a few years ago a guy had a stack of them and had no shame trying to sell them for $25 a pop. He was nice enough to take the time to show me the difference between the two.

    1. The reprint looks a bit out of focus and grainey.

    2. Check the NBA logo on the back of the card, it should be sharp. Also look closely at the R(registration mark) next to fleer and make sure its sharp.

3 Card stock is typically thinner than an orginal.

    4. Lastly I dont have the info handy but there is an exact weight that seperates the fakes from the real thing.

I am sure there are other things to look at. This is what I remember.

I would like to add - the "Fleer Premier" - on the fake - under 10X - the solid colors turn to print dots on the fake.

But, there are fakes where the 'crown' with Fleer/Premier looks pretty good under a loupe (on some the border of the crown may turn to dots - it shouldn't) - but when ya turn to the back one can see some telltale marks of the fake.

For one thing the NBA logo on the lower left is a bit muddy on the fake and the R (registration) is not very clear in the fake.

Also, check the bull's head in the Chicago logo - it's harder to see the white around the eyes of the bull in the fake.

BTW - this one is on a Jordan fake twitter...

They think the card is fake and perhaps the holder also:

thanks fellas. i just compared the jordan to several other cards from that set and it appears as though the one i have is not real. it also looks like the "arrow" on the base of the fleer premium crown has more orange in it on the real cards (as opposed to being more yellow on the fake).

  • Ya... I don't call them reprint unless it says it on there... Anything made to deceive is a fake/counterfeit

So, stamping a counterfeit makes it a reprint?
  • It isn't made to deceive if it states reprint on there...

It seems like our definitions of reprint differs...

Reprint is pretty much any cards made to LOOK like the original, but it clearly isn't (It states REPRINT, whether it is a licensed or unlicensed printing, at least it says reprint and someone isn't going to fool you saying it is original)... A COUNTERFEIT is a fake... It is purposely made to try and get more money out of you than you would pay for a reprint.

What if you sell a counterfeit stating that it is reprint so that the seller knows what they're buying?
  • It is still a counterfeit if you have not put reprint on the card itself... Because the person buying it is 9 times out of 10 buying it to try and sell it locally saying it is real.

If the words "Reprint" in some way shape or form do not appear on the CARD ITSELF, it is a fake.

    edit

when someone "sells a card as a reprint" it is still to deceive I guarantee you from the seller stand point 999/1000 know it is a fake... probably more like 99.999999999999% tbh.... I know in all of the collections I've seen and bought I only truly believed that one guy didn't know he had a fake of the card.

If you stamp "counterfeit" or "reprint" on the card, it's obvious that it's not a real one, so it ceases to be deceptive. It's still an unauthorized reprint, and in violation of copyright and trademarks (at least in the case of Gretzky or Jordan cards - old sets by defunct manufacturers may no longer have copyright or trademark protection).

Unauthorized reprints - just say no.
