1951 Bowman. Great art, beautiful design... a freaking classic!!!
Successful dealings with shootybabitt, LarryP, Doctor K, thedutymon, billsgridirongreats, fattymacs, shagrotn77, pclpads, JMDVM, gumbyfan, itzagoner, rexvos, al032184, gregm13, californiacards3, mccardguy1, BigDaddyBowman, bigreddog, bobbyw8469, burke23, detroitfan2, drewsef, jeff8877, markmac, Goldlabels, swartz1, blee1, EarlsWorld, gseaman25, kcballboy, jimrad, leadoff4, weinhold, Mphilking, milbroco, msassin, meteoriteguy, rbeaton and gameusedhoop.
  • I also think the '51 Bowman is amazing. I know it gets overlooked by some collectors due to the lack of rookies but I think the great colors, image details and use of the large team logos make it near perfect. The one thing that for me would put it over the top is if it had the stat backs (instead of the paragraph of text) you see in the '52 set, just a personal preference.

The other one I love is the '62 Topps for it's use of both action and posed shots on the front.

This is a great topic for me as I have now gone back and taken another look at some of the layouts from just an artistic perspective. It's so easy to sometimes focus on specific cards and worth and lose track of the cards that you I might find aesthetically pleasing but perhaps not great on the investment front.

Keep 'em coming folks, I love to see what folks like out there.

1955 Bowman for me and 1972 Topps.

Love the '55 Design and artwork. 72, how can you not like the 72 set?

I always look at sets asthetically (sp?). I don't care about rookie cards or stuff like that. I LOVE the old Bowmans from 1950-1955 (with the exception of 1953). I also love the 1956 Topps set. Some of the 1958's are gorgeous (Ollie Matson for example). I like the 67 Topps a lot, and the 71's as well. With 72, it is hit or miss. I love some of the cards (Otis Taylor is my favorite card from that set), but the pro-action cards I could do without. Eventually, I'd like to have 50-53 Bowman complete 7 or better, and 54-55 Bowman and 56 Topps at 8 or better.

I'm still partial to 1970 Topps Super Glossy inserts. Did someone mention Roy Jefferson?

Its hard for me to considers sets from the 70's as "vintage". I was born in the 70's and I'm not vintage. image

    1. 1935 National Chicle
    2. 1948 Leaf
    3. 1955 Topps AA
    4. 1952 Bowman Large
    5. 1957 Topps

Of course ask me again in a year and I may change my mind.

  • Yea those crazy colored 1948 Leaf cards are great.
  • Of course I am familiar with the '55 All-American but never really thought about collecting them, I had that weird brain-block up until now that PRO players were what I wanted to collect, but looking at them again, they are REALLY sharp cards.

    Yet another set started...

I bought about 40 original negatives used to make the cards and when I made 11x14s of them you would not believe the detail and color of those photos---cuts and bruises on faces, tears and repairs on uniforms----really amazing stuff.

It's hard to beat the Glossy's for the modern cards.

For vintage, I like too many years to pick one.

    '55's are cool

    image

    '58's have a great design.

    image

Hard to beat the '64 Kahn's too.

You can't go wrong with any of the 1950's issues.

I like all the Bowmans except '53.
I hated the '48 Leafs at first glance, but they grow on you.
'35 national Chicle would have to be the best.

I love the '58 because it reminds me of the BB '59 set and the '56 set is just out of control plain and simple.

This beauty hammered over $11,000 some years ago.

Loved '71 OPC CFL Football too! - sooooooooo tough to find PSA worthy mint examples (here's the only PSA 10 in the set. Sold it this year! I miss you!) image

  • It will always be the 71 & 72 Topps Football Sets, as Well as the most comprehinsive of its time, The 72 Sunoco Stamp set. All hold a special place in my heart.

  • I also love the color of the '55 Bowman's but it seems that the sharpness of the logos and images seem tough to get. I purchased a couple of PSA 7's to check out and they were pretty blurry, perhaps someone who has more experience with this set can tell me if this seems to be a real issue.

Sorry Ryan, but that big white football drives me nuts.
Also they are some of the tuffest cards for me to find.
