I still collect Canseco so I don't see that as fail. Sad maybe, but not fail.
Bet there is more then a couple in those binders I don't have.

Not laughing at the OP - rather with him.
We "all" have a bunch of crap in the closet that would best be served as kindling from a monetary POV.
I agree with Steve to a degree - the investment aspect can't be denied.
Back around 1990 to perhaps 95 - I got caught up in the 'bulk' buying - many - like myself - got caught up in that whole thing - the "rookie" sensation was in overdrive back then.
So, we all have "bricks" and "bricks" of cards that wouldn't command a penny today.
So - is there any lemonade?
Sure - we've all learned better - we've all become better collectors - we all have more fun now - we've all learned stuff...
It's the year 2045 and BBCEx still has unopened cases of 1990 Topps - we can all laugh at it now - in the year 2011. Since what else can we do?
I'm happy I have a hobby - and that can't be expressed on a spreadsheet.

I fully agree with you.
I've enjoyed (and still do for the most part) all of my stuff and really don't consider any of it as a fail. Certainly some junk but even junk can be fun.
Obviously many of us have made interesting purchases (for whatever reason) but it was fun and can still be even looking back at some of these items.
And with all the misses there's always been good hits for most collectors as well.
My Dad pulled one of these in 91 out of 10 packs purchased at a gas station in PA before heading back home.
(Not the actual card)
Found a buyer (card dealer) for it as quickly as possible.
And yes it was sold for $350.

Pretty sure he finished his career with the White Sox. 2001ish? Had a decent season as I recall.

Smart move selling the Ryno! That's when autos were just going into packs and very hot.
I noticed Golden Gems gave ya a free Mark Grace card! Do you still have it?

Totally agree Donato.
We sure don't want to feel like we're preaching - but if one is not having enjoyment? It might be time to call it a day.
Good show!
I'm sure I still have that Mark Grace card in the stack of Grace cards I have but I'd never be able to pinpoint which one it is.

Jeff - I'm gonna be fully retired - hopefully by this summer.
I'll spend an entire day - just looking at what's in all those 800 ct. boxes - and I'm gonna scan EVERY 'brick' I find - should be a real hoot.
Ya gotta love Cal Eldred!
edit: I'm firing the first shot - found this in the file - fortunately I only paid about 25 or 35 cents per - it's an 800 ct. box I believe?
And the 5 Topps Traded.
I've got the Sabo's still in the snap case that they were originally sent in.

I grew up in Green Bay and there was nothing bigger in 1989 the Mandarich. I do not remember where I got them signed, but I do remember waiting in line. I also remember seeing him 3 times in one night when he was out with his girlfriend. It was pretty cool at the time. First at dinner, then at Toys R Us followed by the grocery store. He even said something at the grocery store about us following him.
Well enjoy the "Fail".

Id be interested in buying a Mandarich signed rookie if you'd want to ged rid of one. I collect signed rookies of all kinds.
Mike
For the folks that may be a little more serious here on this topic, I hear what you are saying but part of the fun of collecting is to also be able to look at yourself and have a little fun with the lessons learned along the way.

Correct. Played in 76 games, hit 16 HR, and batted .258.
