Buffalo Numismatic Association show and newp

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,509 ✭✭✭✭✭
For the past two days I went to the B.N.A. annual three day show held in Hamburgh, NY outside of Buffalo. Yesterday I sold some US 90% silver (29x face) and Morgan Dollars (31-32x face). Today I went back to spend the money I received.

The show was pretty slow yesterday except for the one dealer I really wanted to see. He had a constant stream of people at his table while I was there in the morning.

I went back today when the show opened and the traffic was lighter, probably due to the weather. The dealer I wanted to visit is Steve Corvin out of Solon, OH. A really nice guy with an extensive inventory of World coins but this show he brought a lot of banknotes. I bought 4 Thai notes to show when I give a talk for my school's Multi-cultural Day and I picked up this coin:

I didn't get it cheaply but the coin obviously looks better in person. Opinions?

Don - this coin should trade at bullion/spot given that it is a restrike of the Maria Theresia Taler.

Are you sure? No S.F under bust. Has I.C.F.A on reverse. I was told it's an original.

This is definitely an early restrike and not a current one that trades at BV. As you mentioned, there are no letters beneath the bust and the small letters below the eagle which are key diagnostics of the type. As they say, the devil's in the details. There was a thread with a link to how to attribute the early restrikes a couple of years ago, but it seems to be broken. At any rate, a great piece and much better than mine.

The question is, is it KM-1866.2? I paid a hefty sum for the coin and if it isn't an 'original' coin, I can probably get my money back.

I really have no clue how these are priced and rarely bother to squint at the differences. But with that in mind, this looks closest to yours, though I'm not sure how complete that site is. The key for IDing it as that one is the sets of five dots between the larger beads on the reverse crown. That, as far as I can tell, is the only variant w/ ICFA and five dots.

Edit - here's their chart of variants

I don't know anything about these MT thalers, but I hope it's either the real one, or one of the early restrikes.

    I believe I misspoke.

It is the Vienna Mint, 8 Pearl Brooch variety (IC-FA) minted 1790-1805 - AUST DUX. Leypold #23.

I am counting 9 pearls on the brooch. Are my eyes correct?

Ajaan's obverse brooch has 9 pearls, and Theresa is sporting a double chin. That's all I'll commit to. imageimage

Oh yeah, hopefully it's not a Mother Thelesa dorrur.
