A lot of BIG basketball sets just got retired

I just noticed that JJetJ has retired his entire collection and Mint State has them up for sale. That's a serious lot of basketball cards, as he has one of the best basketball collections in the world. It will be interesting to see how they find their way into the market.

Thanks for the heads up. JJetJ was at the top of many basketball sets I am working on. The sets were always hidden, I believe. I think you are correct that it is probably the best basketball collections in the world.

Yeah, I was rather surprised to see this, since he has been a Hall of Fame collector. But, we've seen great collections retire before, so....

He has a LOT of 1/1's and low pop 10's. Is there a link to where they're for sale? I'm not collecting graded basketball, I'd just like to look it over!

I only see it on the Mint State sets that just got entered. He lists to contact him regarding the sets.

  • Sent my want/need list so we will see how willing they are to work together. Wonder why he is selling everything off?

I was looking over the various sets. H2O's original comment about how they will find their way into the market is interesting. I am no expert on this stuff but my limited experience says it will be very difficult to move that quantity and get a good price. (whatever a 'good' price is..) Perhaps the owner passed away and they are liquidating the estate? If the owner was smart enough to compile this incredible collection, he would have to know that it is relatively illiquid. JMO, other opinions welcomed.
  • From talking to Rick at Mint State it does not sound like he passed away. It sounded like they are working together to sell this stuff off.

I imagine that no one more than JJetJ is happy to hear that the rumors of his passing have been greatly exaggerated.

I remember that name from back when I put some sets together...they were always at the top or near the top....
  • Well I got a price list for the stuff I was interested in, and it's clear this isn't a fire sale. Some crazy prices for the low-pop stuff but as they say the registry is a powerful drug. Might pick up a few cards but that's about it.

Interesting thing about these sets. JJetJ retires his set, unhides or publishes it, removes 1 card and then MINT State lists all the remaining cards in the so-called new #2 All Time Finest set. I guess some one could buy the entire set and MINT State could 'retire' with the #2 ATF set. The new buyer would have the #3 ATF set. However, all three sets would be essentially the same cards. I hope PSA ends this 'Retired' set silliness. At least they should show the Current Finest rankings at the top of the page and move ATF to the bottom.
