Where do you go to get your "Key" coins in poor condition :)

I'm trying to fill a few type sets and when I get to the key coins it seems that ha.com will have either "holed/spindeled/mush" or coins well out of my price range.

Where can someone find key coins in G/VG/F/VF condition?

Any help would be appreciated.

In case it matters where to look, the coin I'm looking for is a 1909-O $5 Indian.

Thanks in advance!

For an 09-O Indian, I think the worst grade you could find problem-free would be VF maybe a F with lots of searching. Anything less would be difficult as the mintmark would probably be worn off.

    Keep an eye on auctions
All coins kept in bank vaults.
    PCGS Registries
    Box of 20
    SeaEagleCoins: 11/14/54-4/5/12. Miss you Larry!

    PCGS has graded 1 VF20, 1 VF25, 7 VF30 and 19 VF35.

You will have a hard time finding an affordable one. You will not find one below VF (the mintmark wears off).

So hypothetically if someone sent in a 1909-O in VG condition without knowing it had an O mintmark, it'd be certified as a 1909-P?

Yes. The mintmark was punched into the die so it's raised above the field while all other design elements are sunk below the field. There is no raised rim to protect the mintmark from wear and it wore off quite rapidly. Hence, there would be no trace of the mintmark in the VG grade.

I usually start with MS 65 slabbed key dates, then crack them out, put them in a rock tumbler for a while and sometimes drive a nail through them (especially around easter time). That helps them fit with the other coins in my collection.... image

I was thinking about this but figured I would tie a string around them and then just drag them over a parking lot. I can't afford those expensive rock tumbler things. image
