$500 in Halves

Bank just called and my box of halves is in. Looking forward to do some silver mining tonight! I expect nothing but a pair of really dirty hands, but you never know! Will post results later.

Good luck! Hope your luck is better than mine has been.

Two years ago, my son and I continually found 15 to 20 40 and 90% halves in each box. Over the past few months, nothing. I am close to the tellers at the banks I go to and they tell me they are seeing more and more asking for halves.

Out of 1000 halves, two keepers. One 40% and one Frankie. Slim pickens, indeed. But always something to learn. Today I learned that the bank counting and rolling machine DOES NOT reject 40% or 90% silver. This is good. Another box already on order for next Monday.

I'm guessing that most folks have figgered out that halves are the most likely coins to still be found in silver.

  • Back about 10 years ago my boss and I would go to the casino in Charles Town WV. They used real halves back then, as opposed to tokens or paper slips or whatever is used now, and I found several Walkers plus a good amount of 40%. Rarely any Franklins for some reason.

Here's the best part: No, I didn't sell them too early. An addict in the family bought cocaine AT FACE VALUE for my whole jar of 90%. Easy come, easy go, that's what my boss would say...

Out of $630 I got 1 40% and 1 gold plated 1971. It was still fun looking through them.

Just curious, but do you buy from one bank and return to another bank? How do you
know you don't get the same coins back to go through again?
I've been buying silver from my bank as they get it in. They just call me. About a year
and probably 2,000 halves and not one silver. I get the feeling that I've seen some of
these halves more than once! Perhaps someone at my return bank is doing what I'm
doing and we are just spinning wheels?

It's very hit or miss. I have no doubt that every half dollar sitting in every bank in the United States has been looked at at least once, if not numerous times, over the years. It's extremely unlikely any roll of half dollars has been sitting at a bank since the 1960s unexamined. You're only getting silver "into the system" when someone turns it in without realizing it. That's what makes the process both maddening and fun. I've done it only a couple of times - probably bought about $300 face - and only found one '64 and one 40% during that time. Both came from the first roll I ever opened!

Purchase box of $500 from one bank, cash the clads in at another (credit Union) and they get shipped 70 miles away for re-rolling.

I have a box ordered to be delivered next wednesday. Hope there's some goodies in there. I don't mind my fingers turning black as long as my safe turns a little more silvery.
