Is There a 1983 Topps Factory Set?

Hey All,

Just a quick question -- I've struggled to find a 1983 Topps Factory baseball set.

I know that JC Penney had the 1982-1984 sets through catalog mail order, and some resources say that also carried the 1983 set. I've looked a long time and never even found hard proof that they exist.

Is there such a thing?

Even the 1982s are out there, though somewhat expensive and rare (I know they pop up on ebay once in a while).

Thanks!

John

I don't think so. That started up again in 84 IIRC.

I am certainly no expert, but I see references to 1983 Topps factory sets here -

    1983 Topps Factory Set

It appears they were available in two formats (quotes from the auctions) -

"My sister worked at Topps in Duryea and she bought these sets from the Employees Factory store in 1983--These are factory sealed with the Topps official band around the middle of the set --This is how they sealed them back then"

"this set has its original, unbroken seal, and the full case was only opened to show that each set has its seal intact. I personally purchased this case in 1983 for $115 per set (SO many hot Rookies), but my lovely wife says it has taken up space in our house too long - sell it! I have sixteen ( 16 ) of these from the same case that you see for sale. "

I am certain I got one for Christmas in 1983. It was in a plain brown box. I am almost sure it came from JC Penney.

Well, since there were no Tiffany sets in 1983...

$115 per set? You could buy 1983 Topps sets for $20-$25 all year back then. There's no way anybody paid $115 a pop back in '83. In 1983, who were the hot rookies in the set? Boggs and Kittle. Gwynn and Sandberg weren't hot until later.

$115 per set is a load of hooey.

I have seen a few 1983 Topps factory sets before. I remember Steve had some over at BBCE. They haven't had them since 2007 though.

    Arg.

One would think 1982 would be harder. I wonder if BBCE could locate one?

Yes, absolutely there is. I owned one years ago, and ripped it unfortunately not knowing any better and the cards were “ribboned” just like they look when you open a vending box.

I have one left in my collection, and will never open it. I’m always looking for others to add to the collection, but they don’t pop up like they used too.

These are just plain brown boxes with packing tape sealing them shut with a white sku sticker on the bottom of the box exactly like the 1984 Topps Baseball factory set. Both of these years were “mail away” sets purchased through the JC Penny holiday catalog.

It’s definitely a different segment of unopened material, and these boxes aren’t as pretty or colorful as wax or cello boxes, but are neat nonetheless and definitely rare. I cherish them in my collection and definitely simpler times. I hope this helps.

LMAO, I was looking at some of the older threads I started way back and cringed a little bit 😂, I guess I just got a little nostalgic tonight.
