if you drop a slab, can the card get damaged?

Just curious if a psa slab is dropped on the floor, for example, is it possible for the card to become damaged?

    Yes.

I have dropped a slab and had it crack open and damage the card.

But if no one is around to hear it drop, would it make a sound before damaging the card?? image

if dropped into "Magma" or into a pool of sharks with "lazers" they might be harmed.....I just love those Austin Power movies.....

    YES, definitely!

You dont even have to drop the slab.

Ive seen slight damage to cards that were just stored vertically (upright), instead of flat.
Ive seen cards with small minor dents to the edges where the corner cuts out touch the card.

One collector said all he did was store his cards all vertically in a larger storage box, and a couple did get some visible slight denting damage on edges from everytime the larger box was jarred when he moved it in transportation. He now stores all slabbed cards flat.

Maybe, IMO the SGC insert is far worse, I've seen cards worth millions of dollars, mostly common vintage cards
that show over rated players on them get utterly destroyed by that dang insert.

Ya I agree about the SGC slabs having this problem more often, but Ive seen PSA too.

The other problem SGC has is that some very thin cards will slide under the black insert ie T222, T200, etc. But PSA has its own probs with "floaters" (smaller cards that dont fit the holder that float in middle of slab) turning inside the slab and banging the corners.

    ie.

  • I'm certainly not implying that Beckett are better graders but their holders can absolutely withstand abuse. This is important to me and I buy a lot of BGS/BVG slabs if I think the card meets the grade. I really like how their soft plastic inserts hold the card securely to prevent edge damage and the fact that they also have UV protection. This is certainly an area where PSA could use improvement, not to mention that Beckett is basically tamper-proof. See link below:

The insert in SGC holders has damaged many edges. Sometimes the jagged cut of the insert just cuts right into the card.
  • depending on height , yes damage to cards in any holder.

    Dropped on Cement:
dropped from 1 to 2 feet 98% of the the time NO damage.
dropped from 3 to 8 feet 64% of the the time NO damage
dropped from 9 to 20 feet 79.8% of the time Damaged.
dropped from 21 to 100 feet 97.3 of the time damaged.
dropped from 1,000 to 20,000 feet 99.999% of the time massive damage.
dropped from 21,000 to 100,000 feet 100% total disintegration.
dropped from 12 inches into dog's mouth damage depends on how big & hungry the dog is. always feed the dog. (this rule applies to wives and girlfriends also).

Sometimes the card will slip under (between?) the rails. This may be more of an issue on odd size cards that are covered with mylar.
