Went to a local card show this weekend...

There was a card show at one of the local malls this weekend. It's nothing huge, maybe 20-25 tables, and they set up there every 3 months. This time I concentrated almost entirely on going through the bargain bins. I'd forgotten how fun card shows can be. It's awesome to be able to talk to the dealers and actually get to know them a little. Here are my pickups. Nothing earth shattering but I've found a great affection for 1959 and 1960 Topps, which I guess I'm officially putting together now. image I'm also starting to concentrate on putting together Cardinal team sets from the '50s. Almost all the commons were $1 or $2 each. Probably overpaid in general but I think the experience is worth the extra price.

image Looks like you did good to me Chris. I'm looking forward to going to my first show in a long time next weekend. Even if I don't get much, it should be fun.

Thanks for the post and good luck putting the 1959 and 1960 sets together!!!

Looks like some nice stuff. The "Ace Hurlers" card is cool and a Walt Dropo sighting is always a plus.

I was there also Sat. morning until 1 or 2. You are right, the majority of the dealers were great to visit with. I really didnt see much that interested me but I did pick up 2 sets, 1990 Leaf baseball and 1989 U.D. baseball. I dont really collect much b-ball, but the price was just too good to pass up. So they set up fairly regular? My brother just happened to hear about it somewhere, be sure you let me know the next time they set up, would love to go back.

I only gone to 1 show in 10 years, just don't have time for it anymore, but I hear the same complaint all the time. Selection was just OK, not enough vintage, found a few cards I liked but they weren't in good shape etc. etc. Do you think the problem is that most show-dealers are also collectors and they just don't sell their "gems" or most prized cards. IE, they use shows to unload their duplicates or mid grade material?

I wish I'd have known there was another board member there. It's always nice to meet the people on here. They set up that show every 3 months. The next one is in early July. I'm going to try to make it but things usually end up keeping me from it. I'll let you know when I find out the dates.

That would be great. I didnt know we were going until late Thursday. I thought about asking if anybody from here would be there, but then forgot. Do they usually do it at the same mall or all over K.C.?

There is an occasional show at Metro North but I haven't seen one there for over a year. The one at the Independence center is every 3 months. It's always the same setup and most of the dealers do the show every time.

mcadams: I know what you're saying. Most of the tables at the show are modern crap. But there are 3-4 that deal strictly with vintage. That is where I tend to hang out. As far as selection goes I think it all depends on what you are looking for. For the cards that I'm looking for I want nicely centered raw VG-Ex to NM cards with nice eye appeal. These are the type of cards that I can find all day long in the dealer junk boxes for $1-$3 per card. If you're looking for graded material then I imagine you're out of luck unless it's a large regional show. The prices are DEF high but there are some deals (I use that term loosely, LOL). But I do enjoy talking cards so I can deal with the higher prices.

Thanx for sharing Chris - very nice cards.

I don't remember the last time I did that.

I'm thinking about hitting a few antique places just to see what's there.

Ebay has made me totally lazy!
