A New First in My 23 Years as the Owner of a Card Store

I've never had this happen in the 23 years that I've owned a sports cards store.

I pull up this morning, and there are boxes of cards sitting at my door. There was a super monster box, a monster box, a Nike shoebox, a Skechers shoebox, a binder, and a few open wax boxes from the early 1990s, all wrapped in individual garbage bags. No note, no nothing; they were just sitting there, like someone was making a donation or something.

Granted, I haven't looked through the boxes yet, but it is probably all 1980s-1990s junk. I am still speechless.

Does it say "Sports Card Shelter" anywhere on your sign?

Hey, if I didn't think my local card shop would throw away my late 80's and 90's junk I would do the same.

Could be from a customer who you have served well before...and this customer probably had taken this lot to any number of other card shops previously that day, and they all told him and convinced him that the cards are worthless...and you were going to be the last stop for an offer, you may have just closed for the day, and he probably figured what the yell, might as well just leave it all there for free rather than schleping it back to the house, because you likely weren't going to make him an offer either.

I wouldn't place any of it into inventory or dispose of it yet, I'd keep it by the door for a few days or a week or so just in case he decides to be a jerk, and contacts you and tells you he left it there so you could make him an offer...ya never know with some people these days.

  • the person who left them there probably should've done everyone who still has these cards a favor and disposed of them properly... (fire or trash!) Maybe if a few million people contribute to the effort, some day a nice set of '88 topps will top the $10 mark!!

I'm surprised it hasn't happened more but then again everyone out there still has a garage full of this crap just waiting for it to be worth something. Or trying to sell in on Craigslist.image

That made me think of the pet hospital next to my office...

people are always leaving a package at their door - but in this case it's alive!

You can always drop them off at Goodwill I guess?

I have a card shop and people give me boxes of Un-used supplies all the time.
I think they would rather donate them than put them in a land-fill.

If you ever find out who dumped them there I would charge them a disposal fee. image

3-5 times a month for over 20 years we have a box at our doorstep when we pull up to open up shop for the morning. We own a pet store -- it's always nice to see what's inside image

I think someone was trying to tell you that it was cold in your shop this winter so they were getting you prepared for the upcoming winter!
