'33 Goudey Ruth - real ?? - - Sold for $700

This auction takes place on Sunday. I live about a mile away, so I will drop by to take a look. Any thoughts on it being real or fake?

Thanks for your thoughts.

    Hi,
I'm going to say fake. A tell tale sign of a reprint is if the card in question's image is cropped, meaning that the border surrounding the actual image of the player is slightly cut on all four sides making the image slightly smaller. I posted the card in question next to an authentic version (image borrowed from VCP). Notice Ruth's right elbow, see how it is missing a slight sliver in the raw version? Notice the dot on Ruth's hat? I would stay away.

Also, another good way to tell if a card is a reprint is to check the clarity of the darker parts of the cards. Ask yourself, are the figures outlines too dark? In this instance, yes. Finally look at Ruth's eyes in both the "reprint" and the graded version. Notice how you cannot distinguish the fine detail of the pupil or eye lids? Also, ask yourself, can you see the teeth? In a cheep reprint the answer is "no" and in a authentic copy you should be able to make out Ruth's front teeth.

Lastly, the rule of thumb for this hobby is "If it seems too good to be true, it is." I hate to be a pessimist but you need to tell yourself, "there is not a single copy of this card that has not been graded offered for less then it is worth." Anything of value that isn't graded found at a third tier auction house is a reprint. Also, your avatar is creepy.

    Fake as well.
On a side note, I went to a live local auction, and they had a Super Bowl ticket in a lucite block. Just getting started collecting tickets, I had to have it (as I figured I was the only one there who knew what it was worth). The ticket got bid up to $100 before I let it go. After I got home, I did a little research and found out the ticket was NOT real, but was instead a "promotional" ticket, or a "block" ticket, based upon what the seats numbers were on the ticket. At MOST, the ticket was worth around $5. From now on, if I see something like that at a live auction, I had BETTER do my homework, lest I get burned. Please keep up informed what this fake goes for. I am thinking the consignor wants people in the audience thinking it is real. If it winds up selling for $50-$100, the the winning bidder will think HE/SHE got a steal, when in fact, THEY are the ones who have gotten burned. If it sells for anything more than $10, I predict the consignor will buy all the best looking reprints they can get their hands on, and start flooding your local auction houses with a card or two here and there, spread out over a year or so.

common worthless reprint from the 1990s

The elbow should fit more into the image with the 3 dark lines almost touching (on these reprints the end of elbow was cropped when they designed the reprint)
  • I guess this would be another example of a reprint that is not marked on the back (reprint)?

  • Card sold for $700. The auctioneer stated several times that it had never been authenticated, so bid on what you think. They stated that they thought it was real.

Somebody got ripped a new one, and the consignor is ECSTATIC!!! Mark my words...good looking reprints will start popping up at your local auctions from now on!

    stupid $$

thanks for the update on the final bid image

PS More Fake R319 Ruth Garbage....... on eBay ($500+)

for those that dont know exactly, the key spots to look is the "G" in "George" is too close to the border, the top of hat is cropped, the elbow is cropped, the hand is too close to border, etc...... and the colors are off.
KSA does grade authentic cards so the grading company is not the key, dont know why they slabbed this obvious reprint ??
