Picked up this Nolan Ryan rookie today...opinions appreciated...verdict is in: N8 miscut!!

Picked up at a local flea market for $112.50. I can't see any creases/wrinkles. How do you think this would grade? (note: the piece of fuzz by the upper right corner is not on the card...crappy job cleaning scanner!!)

Thanks-
Claude

    Very nice pickup!

Hard to really see the corner on my lap top - so I'm not sure.

    Good luck on the sub.

I don't really do the flea market thing, but is it odd to find a card like this there for $112.50? I'd expect something at a flea market to be pretty badly beaten up. But this, to the contrary, looks to have sharp corners and a clean surface. Other than the obvious centering issue, looks to be in good shape. Any reason to suspect it may be a counterfeit? If its real, I'd say you did very well.

If that card measures up (not sure if it's the scan, but the top looks like it may be a little wavy) you got yourself one hell of a deal. That would look nice sitting in a "6" slab. If it's legit, you just tripled your money.

PS. You guys actually bargained down to cents? ($112.50) LOL

I want to say really nice pickup but it looks trimmed on the top and the left and right sides look off to me. Do you have another raw 68 to compare it to?
  • nendeenendee Posts: 567 ✭✭✭
Agreed, looks good. I've had trouble finding a raw one that wasn't oc

Guy had all raw, none graded. Also picked up several 1977-78 Topps basketball cards that are truly mint condition. I believe the card is legit and in hand, looks really nice. The $112.50 price was $125 with 10% for this weekend in his case.

Well I guess we all will be looking forward to seeing what it grades. If not trimmed easily a 6.5 maybe on a good day a 7. Just hope it doesn't come back EOT.

Just checked it against a handful of other '68's i had and it measures the same....
  • cadets68cadets68 Posts: 596 ✭✭✭
It looks trimmed on top. Stand it on a flat surface, should be able to tell if it was trimmed.

    Nice card either way,

Based on what you paid, if it grades PSA 3 or higher you're a winner. The only way you get hurt is if it doesn't grade. Nice pickup.

From the scan I think it's a PSA 5 30% of the time, and a PSA 6 70% of the time. God luck.

Thanks for all the input guys...gonna try and send it out this week to PSA. I will update this thread with the results.

  • If the cards is not trimmed there is no way it worse than a 6. Nolan Ryan in a PSA 6 will get you at least $350 on Ebay. If you got a 7 there, you could be looking at as much $600 on a Good Day. My guess is not trimmed. You did very well at $112.50 .

Well...didn't come back EOT. Came back N8:miscut. Do I resubmit??

N-8 Miscut - This term is used when the factory cut is an abnormal cut. The grading fees are returned. You will be given a voucher good for another submission for the same type of service.

Keep resending and pay with the voucher until they give it a grade.

    Heh.

I agree send to foundation for his auto and then send it for authentication and grading.

Can't say for sure from the scan but the miscut might be attributed to a slightly curved cut that slants down on the top edge near the top left corner and a similar cut on the lower left corner. I had a very nice 1966 Mantle that got the miscut grade and when a studied it carefully you could see a slightly curved cut the slanted in on the lower right and slanted away on the lower left.

a Miscut, huh? Do you have a scan of the back of the card?
  • nendeenendee Posts: 567 ✭✭✭
I swear, I've seen a ton of people get Nolan Ryans returned being miscut. Same thing happened to me on my first submission! I understand this is OC, but miscut? I bought it raw, now I'm wondering if it would sell in the case (not that I'm going to - I still love the card)

  • resub it, had a 77 Ryan that came back miscut a beautiful card I thought it was a 10, but after 2 miscut trips the 3rd time it came back a PSA 9, kept it for a while then sold it. the person that bought it sent it for review and the very 1st review it came back a PSA 10, oh well i could have sent it in for a review 10 times and all would have came back 9's lol. image

I had almost the same thing with a 67 Carew RC that had a slightly wavy cut. It came back miscut the first time and an 8 the second. I'd resub the Ryan at least 3 times.
  • Just had that exact thing happen on this guy. Planning on resubbing with some other stuff. Looks like both our cards were cut from the same machine. image
Hey speaking of those "vouchers" to rsub a miscut... is the voucher the barcode sticker that was stuck to the card saver when they returned it?

No, they will mail you a voucher about 1-2 weeks after you get your cards back in a seperate envelop.

Mine is a bit more OC, but yeah... they probably stopped the printer after my cut and realigned it. Figures. image
