    I wonder what the criteria is that kept a milk carton from being a 10. Seems like a very gray area of grading when you get into items that are previously folded up in a cube/cylinder shape and are compressed etc;

    To the contrary, this is the original (unissued) state, it never made it to container shape. That is probably why it is graded as high as a 9. I would guess that if it ever housed milk you'd be thrilled to get a 3. Basically this is a promo item, or equivalent to a sheet cut IMO.

    I'd say it'd be like getting the whole sheet graded.

    I don't really have a problem with PSA grading the entire carton.
    The 71 Milk Duds look pretty good in slabs.

    You are exactly right! It didn't even cross my mind that it was an unissued container.

    Even though we now know it was a promo item that never actually contained milk, I think your question is still valid. Was the grader looking for a skim or 2% perhaps? It just seems that grading things beyond cards degrades the value of what PSA is trying to do.

    I understand getting tickets slabbed, but its a different type of collectible. No one collects mint condition milk cartons, so why slab it in the first place? Make folks cut the card out and then slab that if they want.

    Yeah seeing that we can argue all day long that there are certain sets of cards PSA refuses to grade but they will then grade milk cartons like this. I just don't get it.

    EXACTLY! I love PSA and think Joe and the gang are very astute decision makers about the business, which is why I cracked up when I saw this. How did this get through? I bet someone sent this in under a Jumbo special (probably as a joke) and were stunned when it actually came back in a slab. If there is a PSA moderator reading this, I'd welcome you to share your views on the process for how really odd stuff like this is handled. Group decision? Do Joe and the team sit around a large conference room in large leather chairs and discuss?

    I agree that some of the things that get slabbed are a bit ridiculous. They should hire a Star basketball expert and start slabbing these. There were so many great rookies from 83 84 and 85. It seems like a pretty important set to just decide its too difficult to authenticate and forget about it
