A: It will drive metals sharply higher as the world worries that the U.S. government is going to collapse under the Republican revolt.

B: It will drive metals sharply lower as the world rejoices that the Republicans are serious about cutting the USA's outrageous spending.

    C: All of the above.

    D. None of the above.

    E: No effect whatsoever.

2011 is much different than 1995. They might as well be in two different centuries.......hey, they are! image

Comparing the debt, money supply, entitlement, and derivatives growth in those 15 yrs is what makes it "different" this time.
In the mid-1990's gold was still in the process of the bottoming process after 15 yrs. Not so today. PM's are looking for reasons
to go higher...they aren't too particular as to what those reasons are.

I certainly don't think that failure to approve a debt ceiling by this week will be negative for gold. In any case gold has broken out of
it's $1310-$1445 channel. It will look to retest the top of that range in the next few days or even weeks before proceeding. And it could
do that on Friday for all I know.

If the Government shuts down, all the rascals should be

removed from office. We are the laughing stock of the world.

At the very least, every member of Congress should lose a day's

pay, for every day the Government is shut down.

Political grandstanding like that's new. Shutting down gov't over a drop in the bucket budget cut.

I was expecting more out of the new faces in DC.image

I think shutting it down for a while might be a good thing. They might do less harm that way.

How about if they lose a weeks pay for every one day they are shut down?

It's already becoming a ridiculous spectacle. I don't know how the metals will react, but if there is no deal and it drags on - it could become a "no confidence" thing concerning the whole government. The "big one" will be over the larger budget bill coming soon.

Being italian, I didn't understand this shutdown thing, so I googled it and got to Wikipedia.

Well, it seems it's not really about the money. It's about letting fed money go to groups that facilitate or are connected with abortions. It's a 30 year cultural argument that has come to a head. One thing, I guess, is that push has come to shove and nobody is going to put this off any longer so maybe we'll get past it once and for all. Unfortunately this is likely to screw up a lot of people that have survived all the bad news of the last couple of years.

There are discussions that maybe that's what the Big O is working on, getting 'er shutdown so he can put together some kind of emergency powers and tell everyone on both sides of the aisle to bend over while he does what he thinks he needs to do, unfettered. We'll see how this plays out but it really looks doubtful that it's going to be the same stuff, different day scenario we've been watching loop for the last couple of administrations. The public and the congressional members are probably more polarized now then I have ever seen and both sides are well entrenched and then, there's the Big O. Methinks this is an excellent time to be flush w/PM. It is also likely a good time to have some cash in the sock drawer...just in case someone declares a holiday to ride with the shutdown.

    Got CASH?

non event for metals. This is a dog and pony show. All this over cutting the budget less than 1%. I believe this will make a lot of Americans realize both parties need to be replaced.

Open or closed, the governments policies will only result in higher PM prices over the long haul.

Frankly, I think if they the gov down, they'd do us all less harm.

Good that that this is coming down on a Friday night, with overseas markets closed for another 42 hours after the deadline.

Closing it altogether except for essential services and law enforcement would have
this country back on its feet in two years. Without anyone to bribe business would
    have to compete again.

I find it disturbing that military families will not be paid in a shutdown, but congress will still be paid.
