What would you grade this 1878 Morgan?

coinkid855coinkid855 Posts: 5,012 ✭✭✭
And would you send it off to be graded? This variety (VAM 198) is very rare in MS...This coins is somewhere between AU58-MS61/2 IMO, I'm just not positive where I'd place it. What say you guys?

That spot in front of the eye does not look like carbon, any idea what it is?

It might make MS63, but with the facial, neck and reverse marks, I do not think any further. The spot in front of the eye is quite detractiing to me. If the VAM 198 is crucial to a collection then I might slab it, if not no.

Looks like carbon to me, but I'm not positive.

As for the grades, I'm happy with what you guys are telling me so far! Did you guys take into account the rim gouge above the "T" in "United"? I'm hoping you did! Lol

Looks like a 64 to me; why do you say a max of 61/2?

I DEFINITLEY don't see it as a 64 in hand. I think my pictures added a couple points at least. Lol. Luckily, I just found out there's a coin show here in Orlando tomorrow, so I'll bring it along and show it to my buddy Matt from NFC Coins and see what he says! He teaches grading at the ANA Seminar, and really knows his stuff!

Rub over the ear? I'm in at the AU 58. These are usually very well struck above the
ear and I just see a bit of a rub there and on the cotton boles. Maybe on the eagles
legs as well. Very close to MS.

I hope you're wrong, but I could see it going either way, honestly...

I can see some rub to, but I dont see the rub on the reverse. I see a AU58 or 62. I see some green in that spot, that bothers me. I do not see a 63

I'm in the AU58 crowd. Looks like rub above the ear.

I was going to go with 65, but you scolded someone for his 64 comment image , so I will go with 62/63 camp.

I like the coin in an MS holder

Hey guys, here's an update. I submitted the coin to PCGS with my friends over at NFC, and I am waiting to hear back on that in a month or two. Also, I found how much I paid for the coin....$60!! So hopefully it comes back MS and I'll be a happy camper!!
