196x Topps PSA worthy ? Added 60T Robinson, 61T Aaron, 64T Drysdale

I'm going through all my vintage by years, looking to submit 50 cards. Any guess on how these will grade. I will post scans when they return from PSA. I will post more as I scan them in prior to submitting.

    Nice looking Williams! I'd say 8 - 8.5 and 7 - 7.5 on the Rudi. GOOD LUCK!

My estimates - Williams PSA 8 (7 on a bad day), Rudi PSA 7 (PSA 6.5 on a bad day), Staub PSA 8 (7 on a bad day). I give a high and low range because the grades assigned are too variable these days to accurately predict.

Overall nice cards. I agree for the most part with the grades provided. I think the Williams has a bit of a tilt which might lower it to a 7. More importantly however, I don't see a lot of upside in grading these due to their ready availability. If you're just thinking $'s, it might be easier to bid on them as they come up on eBay and you should get them relatively cheap. If these cards have some personal value, of course that would be different. Do you happen to have 1969 Topps for Ellis (286), Holtzman (288), Barber (233) or Cox(237)? These are some of the minor star/RC's that tend to be fairly valuable in higher grades. Hope this helps. - Kevin

    Ted 6.5, maybe a 7

    Rudi 6

    Staub 5 or 6
  • Thanks to all of you for your input again. Kevin, I don't have those cards you listed but I will take your advice into consideration before submitting any cards. I think the Staub is one of the better cards I listed, I think a few stray pieces of lint/hair on the front and back of the scan might not of helped.. I hope it would be closer to an 8 than the 5 suggested.. I have only submitted 6 cards so far, I'm sure most of you have much more experience to help you make a better informed decision.

    Thanks

I was wondering what the heck that was, because it didn't really look like a crease, but scans can fool ya sometimes. I just figured it was a print mark (6) of some kind, or a crease (5), and the print mark line on the back is not unusual and shouldn't affect the grade.

Considering the new info...I'll up the Staub to 7 or 7.5

    Good luck with the sub!
  • O.K. , Last one, no need to start a new thread.. I hope this is a little higher quality? 1961 Topps #577 Aaron

I'm using a thick black felt like cloth over the cards to improve the scans. It must have dropped a few pieces of thread on the glass. I need to check between each scan to make sure it doesn't look like damage to the cards.

    Thanks

Also wanna wish you good luck on the sub. Very sharp looking Mr. Aaron right there.

Very nice Aaron - decent shot at an 8, but I think it's likely a 7.5 - looks to me like 3 corners are frayed, but it's not always easy to tell from an internet scan. If only two corners are frayed, it might receive an 8, but I don't see an 8.5 because of some minor wax stains - the front centering is spectacular and that certainly helps.

Tough call on a card like that...in any event, that one is definitely worth a sub.

Post the scans when ya get the results.

    Good luck!
  • Thanks to all that replied. I have added my hometown hero Brooks Robinson. This is my first 1960 card that was purchased in the late 80's.

    Brooks - 6

A bit too much wear on the corners for a 7 I'm afraid.
  • Stevek, your probably right but I was hopeful of a 7. Just curious, how many cards have you submitted? I was a little worried about the front centering and the brownish border on the back more that the corners. Again, I have only submitted my first 6 cards, I got (5) 9's and a 7.5 and was a littled shocked at the 7.5. So I know that I have a long way to go on grading knowledge.

    Thanks

I was way off on the expected grades with my first submittal to PSA, it was in 2002. What I thought would be solid 9's turned out to be 7's at best and even some 5's in there which shocked me, but it was because I didn't understand wrinkles, rubber band indentations, and also the supreme importance that corners play in grading...which to this day I believe is a bit unfair. For example I'd much, MUCH rather have a nicely centered PSA 6 with perhaps a slight corner ding but beautifully printed in perfect register, than a PSA 7 card centered just well enough not to get an OC, and/or very slightly out of register - i'll take the 6 anytime for my collection, especially with '52 Topps. But card grading evolved from coin grading and that's the way it is, whereby, I think if card grading would have evolved independently, it would have made for better value as far as the hobby aspect is concerned. Another example is a beautiful mint card with an extremely minor wrinkle, will basically automatically get a 5 - I can understand this on a small coin that an imperfection such as that knocks down the grade significantly, but in my opinion it shouldn't be that way on a card, and I enjoy searching ebay for nice PSA 5's like that.

Bottom line - I gained the knowledge just by buying a lot of PSA graded cards and studying them.
  • Not sure how the centering will affect the final grade? 1964 Topps #120 Don Drysdale.

Steve - Some great points on the grading process. That makes sense about how things evolved from the coin side of the collectibles market. I strongly agree with you on the corners vs. off-register issue. I have too many off-register cards in 7, 8, 9 and even 10 that look ridiculous for their given grade. Of course, as you indicate, they all have nice pointy corners... - Kevin

This card cracks me up. It looks like Mike Epstein is mouthing off to Ted, and Ted's response is to grab a bat while snarling, "I'll split your head open punk!"
