another Ebay seller's take on shipping overseas.......

See part 3 :+)

(2) ATTENTION Overseas Bidders BECAUSE THERE IS NO SELLER PROTECTION FROM EBAY OR PAYPAL ON LOST OR STOLEN ITEMS .. ALL packages TO THE FOLLOWING COUNTRIES will be mailed REGISTERED MAIL cost $11.00 PLUS NORMAL P&H .. INDIA , TURKEY , ITALY , PHILIPPINES , ALL OF SOUTH & CENTRAL AMERICA including MEXICO , ALL OF EASTERN EUROPE INCLUDING RUSSIA , ALL ASIA except P R CHINA , ALL AFRICA , except SOUTH AFRICA , Anything with a $50 value or more will be mailed REGISTERED MAIL to ALL OTHER COUNTRIES including P R CHINA and SO AFRICA .. ALL bidders of missing mail will be blocked from future bidding do to the fact I can produce proof of mailing , they cannot prove not receiving .. Everything is sent with a customs label with full price of purchase stated. The customs ticket states I AFFIRM THE VALUE AND WILL BE HELD RESPONSIBLE IF FALSE so do not ask to have a lower amount put on as it will not be done

(3) IF you are willing to have items SHIPPED AT THE BUYER'S RISK let ebay and paypal know that you want A SHIPPED AT THE BUYER,S RISK ATTACHMENT to be added to ALL INVOICES . IF enough people request it maybe they will hear you and allow shipping that way and maybe more sellers will start shipping overseas
No,no- the kids and the cat are all right honey.

If the seller does not want to sell outside his country, he can just set his Ebay account not to.

  • Makes sense. I've looked in thoroughly to this recently and these are the steps needed to be taken to protect from fraud, either on behalf of the seller or the postal service (Australia's prices and types of mail are very similar to the US). To add registered/insurance to a parcel costs at least $9, then $2.35 for each extra $100.

I resort to self insuring anything under maybe $20, getting signature confirmation for slightly more expensive (doesn't mean anything to paypal but tells buyers that you know they have the package). This is the only way to ship internationally at a competetive rate.

Yes, could block international buyers but each extra serious bidder means more money bid so if an international person wins it, that is extra money they have bid over the locals, so it is worth it.

Also, have noticed that Germany and Austria don't accept valubles so can't send anything to them that is expensive enough to require insurance, very frustrating, sure there are other countries similar

I'm not sure registered mail is necessarily any more secure than regular mail, when sent to some countries. I suspect the respect registered mail enjoys in the US is not shared outside this country universally.

Mrpotatohead, you are correct in that assumption.

I can tell you from personal experience in E. Europe that registered mail seems to be nothing more than a flag to thieves. I send stuff over to my family in E. Europe, lately resorting to finding someone travelling over there already and not even bothering to mail until it is mailed "in country" to prevent theft. The only 'safe' method otherwise is to send via courier like FEDEX or something - and incur ridiculous charges.

  • I'm waiting for two items from the US. One was sent 9th March and is assumed lost, the other was sent 23rd March. Items usually take about 10 day normally so the second item is a couple of days over. The trouble us buyers have is, was the item ever sent, did it not go for as much as the seller expected so they wait a couple of week then refund when asked?
  • Post from US/Canada is taking much longer than it used to.
I am waiting for a number of items sent by registered post and two to three weeks is not uncommon.

  • I sold a lot of 12 modern 5 Deutschemark coins for about $60. I had international postage set through ebay at $17 to cover parcel post and signature confirmation. Had the buyer just ask if I could reduce postage, I had to explain all the above to them. And when it comes down to it, If I had made postage less, then they would have just bid more, in reality they bid $77 it's just that I don't see all of that.

Registered mail no longer works like it used to. Its protections end when the package leaves the USA. Insurance is capped at token amounts and very hard to collect on. The risks of non-receipt have grown steadily over the past decade to the point where it's hard to send anything valuable between countries unless couriered.

Registered Mail in itself isn't a problem IMO. I send Registered packages to friends in Europe all the time. Never had one lost. I do know some countries are riskier than others.

The problem is with eBay and its buyers who know how the game is played. They can easily say a package didn't arrive when it did, file a claim, win and have both the item and the money.
