1948 Indians Picture Pack Expert Help Needed (BIG Pics)

Have been refocusing what I collect and one of the players I'm interested in is John (Johnny) Berardino.

Won this auction.

And this is what was delivered.

As this is out of my expertise as I rarely purchase older odd ball items I'm only going by what I read so this card/item can't be an actual 1948 Picture Pack. Looks to be on thin paper printed from a computer (haven't broken the tape seal on the top loader). Size is roughly 3 3/4" X 2 3/4".

Obviously not as described and will contact the seller (first time I've had a problem on eBay) but want to make sure that I'm right in thinking this isn't what the auction says it is.

I can't say definitively, but your Barardino may have been cut from a 1948 Indians Four-on-One photo pack "card." The Four-on-Ones are a fairly recent addition to the Standard Catalog (2011 edition). They were printed on heavy matte paper stock in a size of 5" x 7". Cutting them apart into singles would leave them about the size you have there.

    Appreciate the response.

Took it out to scan it. Not as thin as I first thought but still pretty thin. Not sure if it's matte or not. Does have some gloss to it and feels smooth to the touch except where there is visible damage to the front (can be seen under his eye). Back appears very white and front image can be seen through the back while holding it up in what is very low light here today (cloudy outside/no lights on inside other then then the natural light coming through the windows).

My scanner sucks so can't get an image that matches what I can see in hand.

Certainly appears to be hand cut and if it's actually from the 1948 time period I would be happy but not what I thought it was.

Guess I need to buy the 2011 Standard Catalog now to help me stay informed. image
  • Wouldn't it be cheaper to just keep it (as opposed to paying return shipping)?

Oh I agree but obviously (in my opinion) it's not as described.

Since I don't have the 2011 Standard Catalog I didn't know anything about "Four On One Cards".

I could also complain that it's not accurately graded as it's got several problems including a 1 1/2" indentation (looks like when you take a pen or pencil and write on something and it leaves the indentation on the item under it) under his eye that couldn't be seen in the scan in the listing.

But this isn't about that at all. Just trying to figure out what this item is since it isn't what I thought it was or as it was described in the listing (1948 Indians Photo Pack).

    I have a 48 picture pack, but it's 600 miles away.

The only thing I notice from the scans is a lack of yellowing of the paper stock. Mine have been stored in the original envelope since forever, and they've yellowed a fare amount.

If anyone has a 2011 edition of the Standard Catalog I would really appreciate a scan/pic of the "1948 Indians Four-on-Ones" section listed in it.

I would just simply refer him to info that this item is clearly not what he thought it was since it is half the size of the legit item. I am sure he would just give you a full refund so not to have to worry about a neg feedback.

After contacting the seller earlier he is more then willing to give a refund but as mentioned earlier it's cheaper to just keep it.

Be curious to know what the other buyers think once they get the ones they won. Completed Auctions

He said he purchased this and other Indians photo pack cards from a collector who told him they were from 1948 and were in an envelope that his father passed down to him and that he didn't research them any further.

I noticed tonight that sometime today after the couple emails discussing this he left me positive feedback.
