PLease show me your most toned PCGS holdered DCAM coin!

my hunch is that you won't get very many pictures, PCGS tends not to grade coins as Deep Cameo if the tone is heavy or obscures the contrast between the fields and devices. not that i totally disagree with that practice, it's just what experience has taught me; a toned coin which would otherwise be graded DCAM will be graded CAM.

BTW, i can't help with a picture. image

I pretty much agree with Keets on his response.

First, I have not had any PCGS dcams tone in the holder other than a couple of artificially frosted coins (but that is another story). Copper can tend to turn from red to brown in the holder, but no wild colors. My silver and nickel seems to be pretty stable in the PCGS holders - not much happening there except perhaps a tiny amount of haze on a few pieces.

Any toned cameos I have were already toned prior to encapsulation. No additional toning has taken place.

And as Keets mentioned, PCGS tends not to give dcam designations to deeply toned coins. I have several cameos with colorful toning at the periphery but none made dcam. I have a wonderful 1954 Washington with peripheral toning that PCGS deemed a 67 cam. I bought that coin from Doops (a long gone controversial cameo dealer) who was adamant it was a dcam. Sorry, no pic of that, maybe someday I'll get a TrueView.

ah, Doops!!!! good ol' Jeff Funderburke, it's been so long that i have forgotten his eBay ID. he was a tough dealer and i was genuinely saddened to hear of his passing despite the bad rep he had with some forum members. i bought a few coins from him and enjoyed his brief postinf here even though it tended to be controversial..........................and always in CAPITAL LETTERS!!!!!imageimage

Not to hijack the thread, but Doops (Jeff) passed away on 10/9/05 at age 44. Hard to believe it has been over 5 years ago.
I bought lots of nice cameos and dcams from him - he "tolerated" me.

Always opinionated, most things were black and white with him - just like cameos.

Here is one I picked up a while back. The color is pretty much red on the obv and rev, with some electric blue along the upper and lower edges of the coin. Reverse is mostly red with just a slight touch of the blue on the rim. Hard to get a decent picture of it.
I think it was toned when it was holdered.

The coin below was graded 66CAM in 2006, I was told at the time that PCGS wold not grade these fluorescent toned Jefferson nickels DCAM regardless of the frost or depth of the mirrors.

TonedRarities, DMPL's are a different animal altogether, the OP is wondering about Proof coins.

thanks for the reply, Sean, that pretty much goes along with what experience has taught me and my submissions have verified. though i have had a few toned coins graded DCAM they are always at a low numerical grade like 66. what has been posted to this thread is about what i expected when i saw the title.............................not many coins.

I have one of the most stunning toned DCAM's you will ever see. It is now at PCGS getting regraded and TrueViewed.
Right now, it is a top pop coin (14/0), and I'm hoping for at least a "+" to separate it from the other 13.

Grades are due in the next week or two and, when I get it, I will post the TrueView pic here.

I also bought a few coins from Doops. Two or three still reside in one of my registry sets.

I never said anything about DMPLs, meltdown posted it and I posted the current photos of it.

Even half-deep tone will kill the "contrast effect" that DCAM demonstrates, so I'd not expect to see many DCAM toned coins. Does that make sense?

It didn't get the "+" that I was hoping for. image

I had been actively seeking proof Washingtons with that type of toning, and most of them were in NGC holders.
I bought this one in an NGC PF68UCAM holder off eBay, back in 2003, for $450.
I was surprised when it crossed at the same grade.
When I posted the results, back then, Mitch (Wondercoin) said that he was glad to see PCGS finnally giving out the designation to coins with toning encroaching into the mirrored fields., and offered me an instant hefty profit.
When it was graded, it was the 11th coin at that grade , with none higher. The pop is now 14/0.
I would venture to say that this is the prettiest one. It is the jewel of my proof Washington registry set! image
