1933 FAKE Goudey Sport Kings RUTH sells for almost $900!?!?!

Are people really this gullible?? The winning buyer already left positive feedback....

Auction

....I like how the sellers states that his Grandfather gave it to him - he knows nothing about cards, yet his feedback is for cards being sold?? How many people need to be burned to sour them on the hobby??

I looked at the seller's FB. The buyer left positive FB for the seller for the card.

Yes. That is what's sad. The buyer thinks it is a real card when it is an obvious fake!

Well, a double negative is a positive, so he does know something about cards.

Since he left feedback, we now know the buyer's ID. I am going to contact him and let him know it's a fake, and hopefully a few others of you will do so as well, and with some luck, he can get his money back through PayPal....

Message sent to the buyer by me just now:

    Hi,

I saw you recently bought a 1933 Goudey Ruth card. I have no interest in the card, but wanted to let you know that I am just about positive from the scan in the auction that it is a fake. You should try getting your money back via PayPal, since the card is not real.

    Good luck,

More to follow if/when I hear back from him....

The "winner" could be a shill, too..

If the winner is a shill then it doesn't matter.

    Good for you.

For some reason I don't think the winner was a shill in this auction. I could be wrong though. I guess the only way to tell is if the card is relisted by the seller again.
  • I see so many red flags in the auction.

I mean, the seller sounds like he's barely functionally literate, and he plays the CLASSIC line of "I don't know nothin' about this card." That dog just doesn't hunt. Anyone knows who Babe Ruth is, and would have the common sense to look up said card if they had one. And there is so much information out there.

Either the buyer thought he/she was scoring a quick buck by taking advantage of an "unsuspecting" seller, or they're an ignorant sucker with too much money to blow on an uncertified card they've never seen in person. Either way, I have little sympathy for the buyer. They ought to learn a very valuable lesson from all this.

I'm tired of this attitude - why not have a little sympathy? We were all not born experts on cards. I'd like to think I know what I'm doing now, but I lost thousands of dollars in the past 10-15 years buying bad stuff, when I thought I knew what I was doing. I wish someone would've tried to give me a heads-up, so that I don't have to just "learn a very valuable lesson from all this."

I got no response back from the buyer yet to my attempt to give him a heads-up, so it's either:
    A) a shill
    B) doesn't believe me (thinking I want to buy it or something)
    C) too embarrassed to say anything back to me, but going through PayPal

I'm not sure, but at least I tried to help someone who I thought could use it..

But the guy got the card from his grandfather. Doesn't that count for something??

LOL! That's the old tried and true line. Whenever you want to sell a reprint, just say "I got this from my grandfather", and watch the bids roll in!
  • Yep, you here that line on that show Pawn Stars all the time. Ha

Well, the winning bidder FINALLY contacted me back, and is grateful I warned him of the fake. He wanted me to tell him how I knew it was a fake. I am just glad I was able to help! I would want someone to help me if I was about to get scammed for $900!

Well sure it is out of his private collection. It was a part of it for almost a week. image

Time to notify local police department that this person is selling counterfeit merchandise online with dollar amounts in the felony range.
  • Dear 501cashley79,

Can I send a PSA representative from the SouthWest territories to view this card?
    Thanks!

If he has 5 or more of the item (I guess any counterfeit cards?) at the time the police pay him a visit it is a class 3 felony.

Hmmm...what a crock...I told him to get his money back from the original seller. I guess it is time to just pass the buck?
  • twileytwiley Posts: 1,923
    or (not to sound confusing)

The buyer who is now the seller could have been the original seller of this card. Which would be why they never tried getting money back from the original seller because they are the same person. So the shill theory could be plausible.

Im thinking this is the case. He seems to buy a lot of cards and would know better then to buy that Ruth.
  • scooter729scooter729 Posts: 1,730 ✭✭✭
Yeah, I had contacted the seller about the card being fake. It took him a week to get back to me, until I got this message late last night:
    =========
    Dear scooter729,

what, how can you tell, it looks very real. i guess i will take it to a pro tommorrow. thanks for the help

    - 501cashley79
    =========

So he must have taken it to a "pro", and the card must have checked out.

Or else he took it to "PRO" Grading, and now has a solid 8.5 Ruth on his hands!
  • Dear muggyman,

I don't understand how he is screwed? Not unless he is the original seller. He is still within 45 days. He could open a INAD claim with paypal and easily win. If he isn't the original seller then he should be perusing a refund. I know I would be. Then again I would have never bought that card in the first place.
