I don't actively seek them out but 10 years ago while in England I picked up a stack like yours for one buck. Couldn't bring myself to sell them!

They come into the shop by the box full, I must have a few buckets full. The low grade collectables go into my 10p Junk box, the junk will go to the scap merchant, while the nice coins find a ready market.

I'd love to go through the early Victoria's to search for varieties.... 1860-1863... plus some later dates....

I have a few dozen (late 1800's thru 1960's in AG to XF) ) that I was about to list for sale somewhere.......... but seeing & hearing how many others of you have, I doubt there's much of a market for them that would make it worthwhile for me......

The old pennies are definitely appealing, but I try hard to avoid hoarding and accumulating and stick to collecting. This is easier said than done for me, especially when browsing eBay and other places and keep stumbling on 'good deals'. The problem is that once you buy something, you own it. Which means you have to store it and/or move it and/or protect it and/or sell it and/or leave it to your heirs.

Much better I think to avoid the pile, and use the funds which would have been spent building it to collect one nice coin.

The above is written from the perspective of a collector rather than a dealer or someone who actively finances their collection by buying and selling (which maybe I should do).

I think they are quite handsome, even when worn. And their size gives them the feel of bullion rounds. The large pennies have almost 9 cents of copper in them http://currencydebasement.com/obsolete&c=GBP

Here's a pic of most of my penny-sized coin hoard. Not a hard & fast size limit, but fun and cheap to put together.

Actually after looking at spoons picture, it could be fun to put together a low ball type set of pennies, will have to start saving a few. And it can start my junk copper bullion stack down the track.
