A few wins from the Baltimore Auction 8 reales

I was fortunate to have a few successful bids from the Baltimore auction presented by Stacks Bowers Ponterio.

Overall, I probably bid on 20 lots and soon realized the competition for the higher graded (64+) 8 reales lot would be a battle. My strategy was to pursue lower mint state (MS62) but condition rarity lots.

Here are a few wins, pics are from the auction site.

1879 Alamos MS61, very rare in unc

1872 Hermosillo MS62, rare in high grade

Question for those of you that know the series: How do you think the cataloger's minimalist descriptions and conservative estimates on the Novotny collection affected the prices realized?

Honestly, I don't know the market or the coins well enough to have a meaningful opinion. I do know, however, that an opportunity was missed to educate less-than-expert readers, and perhaps some new collectors could have been created in the process.

Not about the Novotny collection specifically, but the word coin lot descriptions that I read showed no semblance of numismatic research. Very unprofessional!

    Thanks for the positive comments.

The estimates were very conservative. On the cap and ray 8 reales, the prices realized were 229% of the low estimate and 163% of the high estimate.

Overall the coins were not described with much detail on the overall rarity or condition rarity. The catalog seemed to focus more description and pictures of the raw coins. If the coin was in a slab, the description was simply the krause number, the grading service, and the grade. About 1/3 of the coins were graded. There were some really nice coins that received no love with the description. With that said, the prices realized were very healthy, with competition increasing from prior auctions. Pricing for slabbed material was consistent with recent Ebay pricing trends.

But I will admit, the sparse descriptions helped form my bidding strategy.
