How much would you pay for the piece pictured? What grade of a choice, problem-free piece could that quantity of money buy?

I may be different than some, but I would net grade it "Good" and I would either ebay it, or $20-$40 it if I were selling to a friend.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

I'd net it good also - not beat up and still has pretty nice detail-
for a 211 year old coin-too bad soneone took the steel wool to it

What kind of conservation (if any) can be done?

None. Early copper collectors can be pretty forgiving but they do draw a line.

Make it a cool pocket piece. Lots of stories to tell when you show it.

Would that 1800 half cent's appearance benefit from a cleaning with acetone and then the application of some Dellers darkener to subdue the effects of the cleaning and darken those bright hairline scratches? Agree with the Good net grade.

    Cam-

I would grade this coin VG10 net G4, Avg- or scudzy - a big knock-off for scratches but they are severe - really ruins the coin.

If new to copper - get a copy of CQR from Jack Robinson - he discusses grading. Also review the Goldberg Auctions as Grellman generally gives a technical/net grade.

The 1798 - kind of tough from pic - there are lots of varieties for that year
VF25/Net15 (corrosion?). Cannot tell what is going on below the bust.

I like the 1798 much better even though the pic isn't clear and it's had a rougher life. On the 1800, no better than a P1 to PQueue.

I would net grade the half cent Good-4 and the large cent VG-10. The large cent appears to have
solid VF details, and is not as abused as the half cent. Probably buried in the ground for at least
    100 years.

    irish -

On 1798, I toyed with VG10 net as well but could just not tell from the photos - doubt I would seriosly pay 15 money.
