Stacks had the 'numismatic americana' section of the auction on tuesday evening, and two pieces there had caught my eye from the first time I seen them on the auction lot listings. The first, WOW, one of the untra rare JMP counterstamps on the HT263 Defiant Eagle on Rocks. These are not sold very often. There are five of them, one finer than this one (Fords) and one AU, an XF and a VF. This one dates back to the Virgil Brand Pedigree, and the last collection of note was the Dice Hicks HTT collection (incredible stuff there). Its not know who JMP was, or the meaning of the carefully applied small counterstamp.

the second, this one got my heart purely on eye appeal (and how it is screaming for a gold CAC sticker).....A lot of HT 262s have appearance issues, and this very gently circulated piece just stands out in bold relief from its circ cam fields. And, Mon, its No Problemo. for a coin know for planchet cracks, inclusions, holes, flaws, laminations, striations, porosity, scratches, harsh cleaning....this one just has that magic eye appeal.. I think its way "all there" at PCGS XF40 and begging for its upgrage.

One of the Goals of putting together this set of Three Cent Feuchtwangers is to arrive at a full presention of the set. That means reholdering. My pet peeve with PCGS is their falure to recgonize the Feuchtwanger Cent vairieties...shame on them.

So I can use only one of the cent coins for this five coin set, it will be my rare type 2 variety, a pcgs ms63 and possibly top pop.

Pedigrees, I think I done pretty good. Still need to someday purchase an HT262 with a good 'bloodline', and maybe a 265a, one of the hammered prooflikes...there are a few of those...

but now, as it is

HT263 Matthew Stickney (yeah I remember that thread.....)
HT263a Virgil Brand
HT 265 Q, David Bowers
HT 267 Eliasberg

Some pretty good company there'bouts I do believe each of those gentlemen owned one of the 1804 Dollars also, for what thats worth

But hey, Ive kept you reading long enough on this last day of March....so now, heres a few Feuchtwanger NewPs

Agreed. Don't think I have ever seen that die before. Please post pictures of comparable eagle dies for comparison.

Could you please do a closeup of the counterstamp?

How sure are the experts in this field that that is a "JMP." and not just an "MP." with a fancy foot on the M? Doesn't really matter since nobody knows who did the C/S, but was just curious.

    Or "JVP"?

The counterstamp was first noted as MP but now is called JMP. There are only five known, but Rulau notes the counterstamp on one of the one cent pieces..though this is imaged Ive not seen any auction, or even anything about it at all. My other 263 shows an indent in this area, but is not correctly counterstamped as this one is. Perhaps a mis stamping? I dont know.

Serious efforts have been made to determine who JMP was, using business guides and newspapers of the day in NYC but nothing at all has came to light. What we do know is that two of these have came down in tome in fully MS condition, Im not sure when this entered the Virgil Brand collection but it has been carefully held for a Loooong time.
