Help needed: GIGANTIC German / Prussian medal. Identity of portrait?

I bought this in an antique shop in Griffin, Georgia, weekend before last.

Any clue to the identity of the officer portrayed? (See below for a closeup
of his signature.)

    The portrait looks like August von Mackensen but I can't quite get the letters to work out.

    Yep, he's right - it's Mackensen. The loopy thing is the K and the F looking thing is an S. Here's something with his John Hancock from a German autograph dealer's site: image

    Thank you all for confirming that!

    A very distinctive face on the old general. I think in my postcard collection I have some photographs of him at the funerals of Kaiserin Augusta Victoria (in 1921) and Kaiser Wilhelm II (in 1941).
