As a governor, my job would be to represent the members and wishes of all ANA members...

Greg - Thank you for your responses. I feel an effective leader has to have some "backbone." An empty platitude, as quoted above, does not invoke that impression for me. The original question was about being "proactive, inactive or reactive" with regard to those who maliciously alter coins or who produce/sell counterfeits. The comment above suggests to me that you have not given the problem much thought, and possibly do not care to do so.

At present, it seems there's little more to be said.

Alan Herbert is not running for re-election.

That's GREAT news to hear as I thought he was in the race. In that case, who you support in the VP race will go a long way to determining whether you or another new person gets my vote. Since I'm likely to bullet ballot to assure my vote has the most power with so many incumbents, certain, to be re-elected, I'll be interested in your final answer as to the VP question.

I think he has a good amount of thinking and taking actual stands on many questions and issues, to do...rather than rely on politically correct platitudes.

In news which I'm sure some of you will like, others will not and which personally disappoints me, the ANA has issued a press release indicating that J.P. Martin has declined his nomination for the ANA Board of Governors. This leaves only seven candidates seeking the seven available seats on the board. The only contested election is now for the Vice President position between Arthur Fitts and Walt Ostromecki.

While I am happy to know that I will be able to serve the ANA for the next two years, I would rather not have won by default. My hope is that those people who have not liked some of the opinions I have shared recently will take the time to get to know me and what I will do over the next two years, so that I can earn your vote at that time. I do plan on remaining an active member of this board, especially as related to ANA matters. The thoughts, suggestions and criticisms of members and non-members alike will always be welcome.

The first item that I want the Board to work on is a By-Law revision to handle a means of filling Board vacancies when there are no "runners-up", as the case will be for the next two years. Your thoughts and suggestions are appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Greg

    Greg,
While I appreciate your open forum approach through this medium, I would still like to know what your attitude regarding ANA members "doctoring" coins. If, as you say due to lawsuits, the ANA is afraid to take a stand, or that you personally do not wish to place the ANA in a position of being sued, then I feel the ANA has lost any benefit to the numismatic world. We are all liable to frivolous and even warranted lawsuits, but we cannot allow this threat to be held over our head as a "Sword of Damocles" causing inactivity on the ANA's part and allowing the hobby to be destroyed from the inside.
As to the ANA's designs toward education and luring young collectors into the hobby, what would be the reasoning for a young person to join the hobby if they cannot afford it due to the nature of doctored, horribly cleaned and counterfeit coins. If a young person wished for example to collect a 1921 Mercury dime, they must spend more than the coin is worth to insure they even have one. This is due partially to no one doing anything for fear of reprisal. JMHO.
Hooray for PCGS for attempting to do something about it and had we all offered our help in speaking out, perhaps they would have succeeded. Hopefully, they still will succeed by naming the parties involved in their suspicions.
We are, as a forum, all ready to out an ebayer for selling less than genuine merchandise, but when it came to truly doing something to help the hobby, we all to often "bury our heads in the sand"(not to steal from RWB).
Greg, I wish you luck, but I feel it will be merely a repeat of the ANA's last several years of doing nothing.

Once elected, the logic dictates that answering questions is a no win scenario for politicians. Someone will not like their answer. Moot point.

    Lane,

Yes I will. I have to give you credit for asking questions which are far more difficult than others posed thus far. Between other deadlines posed by the ANA on candidates and regular work deadlines, I've not been able to answer yet, but I promise I will.

  • RWB, I'm disappointed in your response.

An elected official is to represent the organization's members and we should be passing on what we would like Greg to support. If he doesn't have a stance on the subject, perhaps we should give him the direction we support and ask him to represent our interests.

This is a major problem with the country's politics. We allow politicians to do as they please and we do not correspond or lead them how we should...therefore lobbyists and those with money gain greater influence because they pursue it.

I feel an elected representative has greater responsibility than simply being a mindless automaton. While an ANA board member should certainly express and support views of the members, they will also be confronted with situations that were not anticipated at election time. There will also be situations that cannot be fully explained to members including events that transpire too quickly for effective communication. The representative needs to have, and to have expressed during the election campaign, fundamental opinions and views that he/she will fall back on after election. Reality is that on election, every representative becomes privy to far more information than any ordinary citizen or member can possibly absorb – but that is why we elect “representatives” to exercise judgment for the benefit of all.

Your last comment We allow politicians to do as they please and we do not correspond or lead them how we should...therefore lobbyists and those with money gain greater influence because they pursue it, is largely true. But the fault is with an apathetic populace as much as any office holder.

PS: I expect that Gregg will be a fine representative and ANA board member. Not having a "sound bite" answer to my question does not disqualify him in any way.

Based on the most recent Press Release, Greg is one of seven candidates running for seven Governor positions.

    ANA Press Release linky

So if my math is correct, 7 candidates, 7 Governor positions equals all 7 are elected to the ANA Board. There will be 3 new Governors on the 2011-2013 ANA Board: Gary Adkins, Mike Ellis and Greg Lyon.

The swearing in ceremonies will be in August at the ANA Worlds Fair of Money in Chicago.
