Do you guys ever get together and trade cards anymore? Feeling better Giveaway. Congratulations tige

I remember back when I first started collecting we used to trade our cards all the time. I'm going through all my cards and I have so many that aren't worth the trouble of selling. I miss the days of getting together with friends and just trading cards. I'm not talking about trading high dollar cards just doing it for fun.

So I have been going through all these thousands of cards and I just miss the friendships I had growing up in Tampa and how collecting was such a big stress reliever especially when parents were getting divorced. Maybe this isn't the place to get all of this off my chest, but have just been really isolated lately. I look forward to going to some Dodger games this year. My birthday is next week and I always get bummed around then anyway.

First person to PM me the reason why Catfish had to sit out his rookie season wins a 1991 stadium club Brett Favre RC with a little bit of gloss missing *not gradeable but would be great for an auto or nice filler.
Thanks to everyone who PM'ed me and good luck ok tigerdean was the first to respond thanks for checking in

  • My overall stress level has been high the last two weeks, so I understand exactly where you're coming from. I've found that the more life experiences I obtain and the more I interact with other people, the more isolated I want to become. It's just so distasteful in so many different ways. Mellencamp was right - life goes on long after the thrill of livin' is gone. That's why I only collect for nostalgia purposes. All I want to buy right now are cards that had some sort of significance to me at the age of 10 or earlier.

Things happen for a reason right? Just part of the bigger picture. Anything that helps you get through the tough times as innocent as trading cards etc. is a major positive.

Keep your head up and keep plugging away, things can only get better right?

If you have any trade ideas throw them out here. Anything that keeps you occupied is therapeutic.

At least coming here you always have someone to talk to. Good luck!
  • I have started some albums of my favorite players mostly HOF'ers and future HOF guys. I want to collect the base cards from 81-95 or so. I like the way they look in the pages going through their careers and with all the sets going in year order.I think I threw away a lot of the cards I could use for it when I broke about 60 sets up and just couldn't keep everything at the time.

I have a pretty decent start, but have a lot of duplicates from a few cases I opened like 87 topps,89 Donruss,93 Leaf,91 Stadium club and 1992 Upperdeck and all the different odd ball, insert and subset cards that don't really fit into the way I want it to look pretty much uniform and all. I just think with shipping so much value gets eaten up and it would be best to trade in person. I used to trade a lot at card shops, but I don't see that happening with the stuff I have.

Maybe once i get them all started I can get a huge list together and put on the buy sell trade board.

    Thanks for the replies guys

Hi Ben, keep your head up. Life throws us these curves sometimes. Just gotta roll with it the best we can. Sometimes I think our hobbies can be very therapeutic with other things going in our lives. Another baseball card forum for prewar cards (net54baseball.com) recently had a thread about adding politics/religion as another topic. However, a lot of members were strongly against it. Talking, chatting, and learning about cards was something to get away from the complexities of real life. There's already enough of that out there, sometimes you just need a break to relax. There are a lot of great people on this board, and a lot of interesting topics. I liked the Gary Carter thread a lot. It can be really cool seeing these player sets.

Collecting baseball cards is no longer the same as when we were kids. That's just how it is. I collected cards during the 80s/90s, and frankly I was baseball card geek in schools. I had thousands upon thousands of 87 Topps, all from wax packs. I brought them to school, traded w/ all friends where I was basically the baseball card bank since I had all the cards. However, I didn't care about condition, and just threw all these cards in boxes or in rubber bands. They are worthless now. My parents recently brought boxes of these to my house, and I just left them in there. I figure I'll just give them to my kids so they can play and trash them if they want. I did have one card that a treasured and kept in a toploader, which was a luxury during those days: an 84 Donruss Mattingly. I recently got that card graded, and it went as PSA 7.

It might be fun for you to have more of a direction to your collection. A lot of your cards as you said aren't worth much. It might really be tough to justify the cost of shipping, even for trades. However if say you want to collect a certain modern player or team, you can probably do so without breaking the bank. One thing you can do is to join the PSA Set Registry if you haven't done so already. There is no cost to it. You may not have many PSA cards, but that's fine. You can add raw cards also when you add non-PSA items to your inventory. Once these raw cards are added, you can add scans and create a Showcase on PSA to display and show off your collection. You can use the player or team checklists to find out what cards you are looking for, and if these are modern cards, they can be very low cost. You might even be able to trade some of your existing collection for these cards you are looking for. It can be fun and rewarding to see your collection grow. One caveat however. Most modern cards are likely to be of very little value, so don't look at this as an investment and assume any $$$ sunk into this will be gone forever. Cheers, and have fun collecting!
  • Hey I may just pack up all my cards and go on a cross country trip trading with all you guys kinda like LSU Bill's trip to Michigan or wherever it was.

My mom lives in hertford ,nc hence my Catfish collecting and i was wanting to drive out there soon while i have a chance.

I am trying to get together 100 raw catfish cards to sub. I want to do a drop off at PSA to save on shipping hoping for a $4.50 special. I miss being #1 on my master set. I have 4 sealed 1978 sports decks of catfish coming in the mail want to submit the best hopefully get all 10's like last time. I sold a lot of my nice cards 2 years ago and I get annoyed at myself for that one. I lost the money I made off those many times over since then playing penny slots, I know I'm a sucker.

I think I just wanted the challenge of getting them again.

If you come to the Greensboro area shoot me a PM. I've got some cards I'll trade you (or heck, give to you) and we can catch a minor league game and talk about the good old days.

I wish you the best man. Just my opinion, and I know I don't have nearly any real facts, but it might be a huge anxiety reduction to find yourself another roommate. Having an ex in your life is very tough. I know, I've been there. Anyway, you know what is best for you. Good luck with your collection. Growing up in the 70s, I loved Catfish when I was a kid simply for his name alone. Bobby

  • I posted about the classic television channel in another thread - RTV

I like to watch it for the simplicity of the old shows - plus all the sports stars as guests.

Adolescent memories trading cards from under the school desks (covertly). On weekends we sat on the front stoop trading more cards until you got all the players for your team.

What I miss the most is the free cards in cereal, snack and cracker boxes. Cereal never tasted so good as after you pulled a Mays, a Clemente or a Seaver from a box of Kellogg's.

The last freebies - Landon Donovan card came with Ritz cracker box - 2005.

Man this topic takes me back. Some of my best childhood memories were trading cards with the neighbor kids in the late seventies and having marathon wiffle ball games in the backyard. I got back into collecting a few years ago after about a 15 year hiatus. These memories are just overwhelming at times. Must be a mid-life thing.
  • Hi Ben,

I share four season seats to the Dodgers with a couple of friends, they are pretty decent seats, face value $70 each. I would gladly send you to a game to lift your spirits! Please send me a list of about four or five games, and hopefully I will have one of them. Keep your chin up, and I definitely find therapy in card collecting and my interactions, along with transactions on this board.

Absolutely. You hear about all of the scammers, shillers, etc... but there are still a disproportionate number of good guys to bad guys in collecting. Let the cards be something fun to just get away from it all. And you can let the other collectors be a sounding board. We all go through it. tough times. I lost my father last month. Just right out of the blue. But I had people to lean on. People are here for you or for anyone else as well.

Ben not only sent me the Favre rookie card for winning his contest but he also included a nice lot of cardinals for winning his contest. My kid loves the Cardinals cards and I will put the Favre card in a screwdown for him. Thanks Ben for your generosity. Dean
