I have some questions that I don't want to bore the forum with.

Ok, here goes... I've picked up 15 1971S encapsulated Proof Eisenhower's. They all seem to be the Peg Leg variety but I don't see it in the CPG in the Proof. I also picked up 15 1971 Ike Silver Dollar's in the mint packaging. 2 of those are Peg Legs...
    So, onto my questions...
Is the Peg Leg normal in the Proof version? I've seen other proofs that show the "normal" base of the R, and on the ones I have, the "fluted" portion of the base is definitly missing, so I'm curious.
On the two MS 40% Silver, I know that they are the Peg Leg, but do they carry much of a premium?
    Thanks, Bill

71S proof peg legs are common, like several hundred thousand common.

Now 71S uncirculated Ike peg legs are a different story. These are very scarce and, if in higher grade, are worth a few bucks. 2 out of 15 is almost unheard of, be sure they are defintiely peg legs.

bronze6827, thanks for the info. The website is excellent as well! The two Uncircs are deinitely Peg Legs and I would also venture to say they're the SPL type as I compare them to the pics on the site. By way of explanation of the odds of have 2 out of 15. These were all shipped from the mint on the same day, Jaunuary 4, 1972. There were 5 each in 3 envelopes. My thinking ids that it's possible that they would have been struck in the same general time frame.

    Thanks again for the info.

  • The 1971 S proofs are a very interesting case. The early strikes were peg leg by design. Later issues had serifs crudely added giving a "funny foot" effect. Later years had normal serifs. The mint changed their official story about these over time.

Yeah, it's a ton of them for sure. That sounds about right without bothering to look. I used to know that off the top of my head before I swamped it with 894 other (and most likely useless) Ike statistics.
