The 2050 uses what is called a "Contact Image Sensor", or CIS for it's scanning element. Basically, it will only give you sharp detail on whatever is directly touching the glass. If you put a graded slab on it, it'll try to scan the surface of the slab, not the card within, so the card will be slightly out of focus. It will scan raw cards just fine.
What you need to find is a scanner that uses a "Charge-Coupled Device", or CCD for it's scanning element. Those will give you a great, crisp scan of the card itself. You usually find that type of element in the scanners priced above $50.
