"Set Break" - The Magic eBay Words

I should start cracking my PSA 8 sets out of holders and sell them raw on eBay. Then I can replace them in PSA 8 holders for less. Doesn't any of these bidders know they can buy many of these cards already in 8 holders for less and crack them out to make them raw again?

    There are a lot of raw collectors out there who either eliminate the words 'PSA' from their searches, or who don't know (and don't want to be bothered with) cracking cards out of slabs.
  • Very interesting as this seller has been a graded card seller in the past. He used to go by the ebay id valleycardshop or something like that.

    Maybe the bidders think they are potential PSA 9s or 10s.

    Good to know...I always thought it was a board member with a similar name.

    one good thing about set breaks:

    sets are big and no one can buy every card. while the raw set builders are duking it out over the cards they actually need and don't mind overpaying, there are others that inevitably slip through the cracks and wind up being had for a good price.

    be content to let the exploding cards go since there seems to be a fairly consistent supply of sets being broken for most of the vintage Topps & Bowman years.

    "let the game come to you", as they say.....if hype is driving the numbers too high, move on until next time.

    Not sure about prices or anything...

    but I have to say - there's no guarantee those are Nmmt from the scans - they could easily be less IMO.

  • hi, his highest card right now is a 59 alou...
    current bid is $58.99
    ========
    VCP for a psa 8 is $58.73
    =======
    this raw card of alou is a long shot to get a psa 8...its less than 60/40 top to bottom
    likely psa 7....

    he's doing well on that card at least....

    Its funny, I had a first hand seat today to a 86-87 Fleer Basketball "Set Break" all day. I put bids in from anywhere of 10-20% over VCP on 19 cards today. I won three of them. Many of these PSA 9's were going for 2 and 2.5X VCP average. I couldnt believe what I was seeing. It almost became amusing. It only takes two bidders to drive the price up on a card.

    Didn't know that. I've won several cards (raw) from him in the recent past and he's decently accurate on his grading descriptions. Whenever I've complained about wrinkles or creases, he'd refund me with no questions asked. At first I did pretty well buying from him but once he got a following, it became a hopeless effort.

    in deference to the original post, there are indeed some rather strong amounts being paid for the nicest cards in the '59 set break.....anything sharp & centered is getting bid up way beyond what we might think is sensible....on the other hand, anything sharp but off-centered can be had for peanuts by comparison.

    if you have a horde of nice PSA 8's from a certain year and could build a consistent NM/MINT set including the raw cards, then it would potentially make fiscal sense to crack 'em out, wouldn't it.
