Do you collect players you don't like?

Will you collect cards of players that you personally don't like, based on their fame/value/etc? For example, I don't collect Ty Cobb (racist, general a-hole) or Willie Mays (arrogant), both of which are arguably the best to ever play the game. I prefer Killebrew, Musial, Aaron, Brooks Robinson and nice guys like that. Does this matter to you?

Regarding Ty Cobb, I'm not sure you can judge the man as a whole by only a portion of his life.

Cobb may have had racial views that are no longer politically correct, but I think you have to consider that in historical context. He grew up in a time and a place where his views on the subject of race were not extraordinary. His father, or certainly his grandparents, would have had first-hand experiences with Yankee (as opposed to Yankees) aggression and oppression in the Civil War and during Reconstruction.

I've just finished reading the entire run of The Sporting News for 1953. Time and again there were news accounts in that paper about Cobb's philanthropic generosity, especially benefiting youngsters and the communities in which he lived. I say the good he did in that milleau far outweighed a few bloodied shins on the basepaths and the occasional thumping of a drunked loudmouth in the stands.

As much as one can know a person from second-hand published accounts, I don't think Ty Cobb had cause to dread his Judgment Day.

I think it's been pretty well established that one of Cobb's earlier biographers, Al Stump, signed about as many "Ty Cobb" autographs as Cobb did himself.

I'm on the OJ Simpson player registry. I thought (and still do) that he was the greatest football player that I have ever seen. That being said, as a human being he hasn't exactly proven to be a great guy.

This thread gives me a genius idea. I'm gonna pitch to PSA the thought of having an "all bad guy" rookie registry set. We could all vote on who belongs in the registry. I'll start with a few:

    Barry Bonds
    OJ Simpson
    Ty Cobb
    Michael Vick
    Plaxico Burress
    Ray Lewis
    Pete Rose
    Terrell Owens
    Dennis Rodman

I don't judge players that I've never met or had any interaction with. Guys like Dick Allen, Pete Rose, Jim Rice, Albert Belle, Barry Bonds, and yes Ty Cobb and Rogers Hornsby all developed bad reputations. But who am I to judge? They are all part of the game and besides wouldn't it be boring if everyone acted like Cal Ripken?

I've never really collected players that I don't like, but I've grown to not like some of the players that I've collected. I'm sure that some of the others that did the "penny stock" investing in the late 80's and early 90's can vouch for the likes of Alan Anderson, Sam Horn, Hensley Meulens, Roberto Petigine and my favorite Marc Newfield (all 25,000+ of them!).
