PSA Graded 1979 O-PEE-CHEE Hockey Packs

Does anyone else feel that the chances of actually pulling a Gretzky rookie from one of these is slim to none? Considering there's generally one one per box, I would think that once the Gretzky has been pulled many would stop busting the wax and send the rest in for grading for some return on investment. Anyone else feel the same about this? Differently?

Edited to note that I have a PSA 9 1979 O-PEE-CHEE pack with Stan Weir (Edmonton Oilers) showing on the back. I thought it was interesting to point out because of the similarity in pose to the Gretzky rookie. Check out the link below to note how much it would look like the Gretzky card through the pack:

You are right about the Stan Weir card. I forgot about that card.

I also agree with your post. I actually bought many hockey packs from the 1979-80 year, but they were all Topps. I must have opened at least 2 boxes and only got one Gretzky. It was one of the hardest cards to get that year. He was already a hot card even then.

  • You are absolutely correct.

I always feel it is better off to just buy the card that you want than try to pull it. It is nowhere near as much fun and quite boring, but you will save $$$. Even if you pull the card you are looking for what are the chances you get it in the grade that you want?

I agree, I always buy what I want in top grade. It's a hopeless waste of money busting wax hoping to return profit although I will purchase entire vintage boxes and bust them for fun. I also collect PSA graded wax packs, not expecting to ever open them in search of that elusive card. With the '79 O-PEE-CHEE not having anything else of enormous value after the Gretzky rookie, I would anticipate that unless you buy a graded pack where all 48 were sealed from the same box your chances of even pulling a Gretzky rookie, in any grade, are approaching zero. That being said, I did see a PSA graded pack with Gretzky showing on the Bay recently.
