New Here - Hey All!
Hello All,
I've been lurking for good number of months and finally decided to join - I've gotten a lot of good information already from here and I appreciate that.
A little about me... I was in the hobby from the mid-late 1970's to 1992ish and got out until a number of months ago. Believe it or not, my parents were downsizing to their retirement home and I found a bunch of my old baseball cards.
Originally, I wasn't very interested in them but the memories came flooding back. It was a lot of fun collecting them, trading, etc. with my friends.
Once this drug addiction called me back in, I was amazed at how much more complicated things had become. A lot of things have changed (ie: Donruss, Fleer, UD, etc., card grading, ya know, the whole internet thing).
It seems like you guys have a great community here already.
My interests:
Sealed factory sets (Topps, Donruss, Fleer). Working on the runs of them all.
1970s sets - a lot tougher and more expensive than I remember it being!
1968 Topps - working on a PSA graded set.
Of course, I keep looking at all this Heritage stuff, chrome stuff, etc. Interested, but haven't seen any around to jump in and start ripping.
I look forward to being on here, learning, and hopefully adding to this place.
Thanks a lot!
John

There are a lot of great guys on this board. Anything you need help with just ask, someone is bound to know.

I've read studies from the "National Counsel on Various Addictions Out There" and they rated this forum and card collecting worse than drug addiction.

That was a very well-written, pleasantly toned, dignified initial posting.

Slowly but surely learning (again).
My wife thinks I am:
1. A nerd (of course, there's other reasons for that as well).
2. Crazy.
3. Owing her something pretty for the money I'm spending on cards.
Any tips/advise for a born-again newbie?

John:
I learned a long time ago, never let the wife know exactly how much I spend and ALWAYS let her know that a nice unexpected dinner or a nice surprise gift was from profit realized from selling a card(s) even if it isn't!
If you need any help on the 68 set let me know.

Welcome to the boards. GL on your 68 Topps set.
I would take Scott's advice when it comes to letting the wife know exactly how much you spend.
Also far as Heritage cards and interested but not sure. My personal favorite is 2004 Topps Heritage set. It is my favorite set they have done so far. I also like 2001 Topps Heritage too but 2004 is better imo.
I wouldn't get to wrapped up with the whole chrome refractor thing. Don't get me wrong some of them are really nice and all. I just think they were more of a marketing ploy then anything else.
Welcome again and have a great day!

First, welcome!
Second, exactly right...$200+ dinners for two without the kids are how I got my wife to accept cards and fantasy football!
Welcome aboard!

Hi John
Advice?
This is for someone coming back to the hobby or someone new. Since a hobby can be addictive and most may go OCD for a bit - my advice is simple.
1. Establish a focus - you've got that locked in pretty good.
2. Establish a budget - and don't go over!
3. Ebay - if you see something you just can't do without - and over budget? Let it go. Another will come by in a bit - with few exceptions.
4. You can go broke saving money on ebay - pace yourself - keep the budget in mind - this will keep the anxiety down along with the fibs to the spouse and prevent the nite sweats!
5. Don't break #2!!!!
IMO, there's a thin line between a hobby and get out insanity! Think of collecting as a marathon rather than a sprint - there's no extra points for speed in doing a set e.g.
Good luck - don't be a stranger and most important - "you're amongst friends here!"
It's amazing how something like little pieces of cardboard draws together all kinds of different people into a common community like this.
And lilamule - Thanks for your help! I really appreciate it.
Inching closer to a 1968T set!!

Welcome to the boards!! Yes, this is a DRUG!! I admit I need help, but I refuse to stop buying cards!!! : ) ...I feel much better now...
I got back into the hobby in a similar was as you. I collected when i was a kid (88 - 92). When I graduated college in 2000 I was cleaning out my old bedroom in my parents house and found baseball cards in every draw!! I was amazed how much prices went down for awesome cards I had like 1989 RC's, 85 Topps, etc. I also couldn't believe how cheap cards where that I idolized and dreamed to own, like a henderson rc, jerry rice and scotty pippen rc., etc. Needless to say, 11 years later and I haven't stopped buying!
So my bit of advice, is to make a video for youtube of some of the highlights of your collection. Copy and paste the link below to check out some of my videos (i have over 75,000 views on my videos now!!!). I have truly found these videos to be a remarkable way to enjoy the hobby and share my collection with the world!!
