Mike Tyson 1987 Panini sticker card ......

Just got this baby in the mail today. Very sharp card/sticker. The centering is not perfect but the card is razor sharp. Did not disapoint!

Nice card. He was signing graphs a couple hours away a couple weeks ago. If you'd like it signed, find someone going to the boxing hall of fame inductions and try that route. I'm going to be trying to find someone myself to get my 86 A Question of Sport Tyson signed.

Great looking card! Are you going to be submitting that?

I might. The centering is off so it is most likey a PSA 8.

I need to research these more. The pop report has a ton in PSA 9 and a few in PSA 10.

If this had better centering it would grade very high.

Dpeck - I'm assuming this was one of your victories? '86 Tyson Panini I bowed out of the bidding pretty early on.

Check it good under light for creasing/dents -- stickers are notorious for these and it can sometimes be difficult to spot.

Good thing is that if there is one you can flatten it out.

Good luck with the grading David!

No that was not my item. I look all of the time but missed this one. I am glad the selling price was $140 US. My target price for the Tyson Panini is $250+

Mullins you are absolutely correct. The 86 Panini is a very flimsy sticker and the 87 is much more like a card.

Tyson cards are under owned and are going higher for certain.

I have noticed the increase in popularity of Tyson cards with the premier of his Animal Planet TV show and induction into the HOF. Does anyone have any idea what the value of this strange Tyson card is?

wow. sales in boxing panini cards have been really strong lately. The 73 foreman sold for close to 70 bucks a few weeks ago. A second year Joe Frazier with glue on the back is selling for over 50 bucks on ebay right now. I could see some of the rookie cards going for higher dollar amounts but i'm really surprised that 2nd year cards are selling so well.

There are three variations of the 1987 Panini Mike Tyson. The most common is the harder card stock version with #41 Allessandro Bianchi on the back. These seem to surface quite a bit more then the other two variations.

Here is an example that I self submitted.

    image

    image

The population states there are four PSA 10's but I have never seen one surface. Because of the harder card stock this example is much easier to find in strong condition. I have been actively looking for the other two variations and found a guy who had one for sale and received it in the mail yesterday. It has a card stock that is very similar to the 1986 sticker that is extremely flimsy and is more like a traditional sticker. There have only been 5 of these graded by PSA in comparison to 40 of the more common version.

Here is the scan of it.

    image

The third variation has another person on the back with the last name Gritti and is numbered 114. I am still working on locating one of those as well. There are only six of these graded so far by PSA. I plan to send this newly found example in soon.

With the purchase I also bought this 1996 Sky Sports Merlin #217 Mike Tyson. It doesn't appear that any of these have been graded by PSA.

I've seen similar variations with the '87 Panini Andre Agassi card from that set. I have a feeling there's more to it than we know at this point. Why would they intentionally release three versions of the same player's card/sticker in the same set? I guess they could have released the stickers as a separate product intended to be stuck into the albums, and then a more traditional trading card release in different packs.

Jeff about a year and a half ago some packs of these showed up on EBAY and I bought three.

I just went and looked at them and they are mixed with the soft backs and hard backs in the same packs.

The hard backs appear to be more like an actual card. I am not certain if you can pry them apart or not but it doesn't appear that way in hand. Clearly the soft backs can be.

    Interesting stuff.

That is very interesting, D. I'm glad you opened some packs first hand - that clears my question up. Do you remember what the card-to-sticker distribution was like? Was it was one sticker per pack?

I just counted them and it was half and half.

The only thing that would make sense to me with why the Tyson is so hard to find is most were probably stuck to the sticker albums.

I am going to try and peal apart a hard card stock card and see what happens.
  • Dpeck100Dpeck100 Posts: 10,912 ✭✭✭✭✭
The hard card stock is indeed a sticker too. The athlete on top is the sticker and the athlete on the back is just printed on a much harder card stock then the flimsy supersport back.

I only had 18 stickers from the packs and all of the backs of the hard card stock are soccer players of the 9 in my stash.

You would indeed be able to pull the face off the more common Tyson card and place that in a sticker album and perhaps collectors at the time saved the hard card stock examples and used the supersport backs for their albums.

There is obviously more to this story that we don't know.
  • Big80sBig80s Posts: 2,758 ✭✭✭
Thanks for looking into that. It all seems odd to me. I'm not quite sure why they would produce the standalone stickers, if the could just make all of the cards a 2-sided sticker. It seems like you'd get a lot more bang for your buck just producing them all as 2-sided.

A very interesting discusion. As an outsider looking in, a couple of questions. Did the 1986 issue suffer from condition issues so the thought might have been to put the cards in to stiffen the packs and help protect the 1987 stickers? Or could it have been a marketing test to see how popular the 2-sided format would be? Were there any later sets released than 1987 that had the 2-sided format?

I was thrilled to get this in the mail today. A tremendous example of the SuperSport back. So far there have only been seven of these graded by PSA.

One of the five PSA 10's came for sale last month and I wasn't all that thrilled with the centering and didn't bid as hard as I would have if it was stronger.

    87 Panini

This example popped up last night and looks to have great centering. I emailed the seller as he had a $500 buy it now to see if he would take lower. He added the best offer feature and accepted my $330 offer which is what the other one sold for.

    Great pickup.

Also, in looking at the eBay listing, there was a link to this item (which is actually on the Mets mlb.com store). How cool is this for the mid-1980s New Yorker?

    Such a great item!

Being from Florida we didn't have a team in 86 so it was either like the Braves or pick a team and the Mets were my team. The wall of my bedroom was covered in sports posters and Darryl Strawberry was my guy. I still have the binder that stores hundreds of his cards from the 80's and early 90's.

  • miwlvrnmiwlvrn Posts: 4,264 ✭✭✭✭✭

I would imagine that before there were MLB teams in Florida, the most common situation was that you were a fan of whichever was the home team during spring training. Since the players are pretty accessible during spring down there, it was probably easy to like a team where you got to meat the guys on that team?

That sounds logical. The Minn. Twins played spring training in Orlando and we were also home to their Double AA minor league team.

Obviously I liked Kirby Pucket but the Mets had Doc Gooden and the Straw Man.

We have discussed it many times on this board but it never gets old. Chasing Doc Gooden cards in 1985 was a ton of fun!

I think one of the great things about collecting cards as a kid is you learn about markets and items of value. It helps sharpen your business skills at a young age which in my view is a good thing.

Here are the pics I took tonight. I am very excited about this card. A month back when the PSA 10 surfaced through the PWCC auction it was the first time in the entire time I have looked for Mike Tyson cards one came up for sale on EBAY. That is nearly four years. It was the first increase in the Pop in that time frame too.

This is a super strong card. Razor sharp corners, great centering and good back centering too. It is a very solid 10. I love crossing cards like this off my want list.

Interesting. I noticed this too with the Holyfield card in this set. There are 2 versions with a soccer player on the back and a Supersport back. I have found too that the Supersport back is the hardest to find.

    Tyson PSA 10

The same card that was auctioned off by PWCC in early March is back up for sale but this time it is Probstein.

    Tyson/Gritti

I can't believe this card came up for sale. It is a Pop 1 in a PSA 9 and by far the hardest variation of this card to find. In my last submission I sent in my only copy knowing it would grade very low but just wanted a copy.

There are only seven copies ever graded by PSA. WOW this is exciting to add this to my collection!!!

    Thanks guys.

I am really curious why some have three variations. If you look at the population report it shows three for Jordan, two for Bird and Jabbar, three for Holyfield, two for Chavez, two for Agassi, two for McEnroe, and only one for Johnson and Lewis.

If anyone is an expert on Panini stickers please chime in.

This just came in the mail today. I saw in the listing it was an older scratched holder so I will definitely at some point pay to get it re holdered.

I guess we can just chalk this up to the PWCC effect. I like seeing one of these in an 8 go for $260 but can't say I ever saw this coming.

The second PSA 10 I purchased went for less then this.

I was kind of bummed to see this listing pop up today as now the Gritt back is a Pop 2. It will be interesting to see what kind of price this gets.

The Gritti back is in RAS's set and didn't sell publicly so very hard to tell where the market for this example is. The seller listed it at a price where I assume they have some knowledge of how much tougher the Gritti back is and especially in high grade. There are currently only 2 PSA 9's and no 10's vs. the more common Bianchi back that has 37 PSA 9's and 6 PSA 10's. The Supersport back has the same number of copies graded at 11 and 4 of those are PSA 9's with no 10's. Every time I see a Gritti back on EBAY I try and buy it. With these foreign issues it is hard to find information so no idea why Panini issued three copies of some of the bigger names in the set.
