  • If really 'Hot right not', I'd have to say my idols I grew up with, Canseco and Clemans. If current stars, maybe go for one of those B Holler cards or anyone from Shreveport. The word on the street is that is where the young stars are coming from.

Tough to find those B Holler cards. I think I have the only one.

But GooshA, since you are such a fan, I wouldn't mind sending it to you. Does he know about this obsession?

Hi Larry - Maybe Jesus Montero? Slow start in spring training, but a huge, patient guy.

  • Thats my man, Buster Posey. Just taring it up.

Montero, Stanton, Aroldis Chapman, Bryce Harper, Posey to name a few. Their cards will be hot in 2011, well even hotter once they start putting up stats.

My picks for big seasons from rookies and second year players that may be flying a little under the radar and offer a nice short term hobby investment:

Brandon Belt 1B SF (whether he gets the nod for Opening Day or gets an early call up, this is Buster Posey revisited)
Jason Heyward OF ATL (not under the radart, but with the big hype last year and big prices, he's just begun to tap the potential and can be had for less than this time last year)
Jhoulys Chacin SP COL (this year's Ubaldo Jimenez)
Domonic Brown OF PHI (injuries have put him on the back burner, but a serious five tool player and a bargain right now)
Dayan Viciedo 3B CHISOX (another injured player that has slipped the minds of many -- don't wait too long)
Jeremy Hellickson SP TB (stuck facing the AL East, he'll still be better than most)
Mike Trout OF ANA (another one that may take a bit to get to the bigs, but he's a fantasy superstar in waiting)
Dustin Ackley 2B SEA (a pure hitter, but not enough pop to compare to the Cano's of the league)
Michael Pineda SP SEA (This kid would anchor almost any staff that didn't include King Felix - but he's the real deal)

I'm high on Starlin Castro. Everyone thinks he'll develop more power as he fills out (only 20), but he could eventually hit 20 HRs hit .300 and accrue 200 hits per year with 15-20 steals. Of those that have already debuted, I like the aforementioned Hellickson, Heyward (though all the injuries are a concern) and Brian Matusz who had a 7.3 Dominance Ratio (including upping his K/rate by 1.3 in the second half) while also posting a 2.3 Command Ratio which is excellent for a rookie starter. His only problem is his 45% flyball rate in a yard which inflates HRs by righties by 16%.

Top rookies who could have some semblance of impact for the 2011 season - Brandon Belt, Zach Britton, Jesus Montero, Mike Moustakos, Jason Kipnis CLEV, Kyle Gibson SP MINN, Kyle Drabek, Brett Lawrie (now moving to 3B), Tony Sanchez (C) Pitt, Chris Carter (OAK), Pineda, Jarrod Parker of the DBacks, and Julio Teheran who is the top SP prospect in baseball. He should start out at AAA for the Braves and may be up late in the season. Throws in the mid 90's and has 4 plus pitches. If you want to find the next Brian Roberts there is Jean Segura for the Angels. 2B capable of hitting .300 with double digit HRs, and 40+ SB potential. He'll be starting out at AAA. Also the two guys SD obtained from BOS in the A.Gonzalez trade - Casey Kelly and Anthony Rizzo. If you look at Rizzo's minor league track record they are very similar to Adrian Gonzalez's. Rizzo has posted a 822 OPS compared to A.Gonzalez's 813. Kelly struggled with command at AA last year, but scouts still love his stuff and makeup.

Belt and Montero are probably the safest bets for investment purposes. Kipnis is a classic overachiever like Pedroia. He won't have Pedroia's BA, but he'll have more power....if they keep him at 2B and not move him to the OF. He'll be in CLEV before the year is up. I like Britton a lot but he's a sinker ball pitcher so his ceiling is Brandon Webb (from the left side). Chris Carter will always struggle to hit .260 so at his full potential he's Adam Dunn from the right side, but if he can't fully get things together, he's Russell Branyan from the right side. Scouts are mixed on Pineda. BP loves him and think his changeup and slider are workable plus pitches. The guys at BA are not so high on his secondary pitches and think he could be Neftali Feliz and fit better in the pen. This is the main reason why the Rangers haven't moved Feliz to the rotation - his lack of polish on his secondary pitches. I'd pass on Dustin Ackley. He's not good enough to stay at 2B defensively (esp for the defensive minded M's) so he'll eventually move to LF, DH, or 1B if Smoak turns out to be a bust, where he'll be nothing more than Daric Barton with a few steals. A .400 OBP, 100 runs scored, and an empty batting average with maybe 15 HR power. Viciedo is being moved to RF in AAA this year because he's fat and he's also a total hacker. Even if he reaches his full ceiling, what would that be? Carlos Lee? Who collects Carlos Lee? Chances are he''ll be closer to Carlos Quentin sans the plate discipline. Another to avoid is Dee Gordon, the Dodgers' top prospect. I've never seen an alleged top prospect get the bat knocked out of his hands quite like Dee Gordon. Great speed, good glove, above average arm and that's about it. Same with Desmond Jennings. I'm not sure he'll ever be what people think he'll be - that being the next Carl Crawford with a little less power. Chances are he'll be lucky to be the next Jose Tabata with a little more speed.

for next year you'd have to add like half the Royals' farm system with Hosmer, John Lamb, Mike Montgomery, Wil Myers, etc to go along with Bryce Harper, Mike Trout, the Rays' SP Matt Moore (led the minors in K's but walks a ton of guys), OAK's Grant Green (SS),, and the next SF Giant young hurler - Zach Wheeler.
