Searched 20 rolls of cents today

BBNBBN Posts: 3,761 ✭✭✭
Had little going on today so I found a way to kill the time. I have decided to make a quest of filling a 7103 Dansco album from wheat cents that I've only gotten from circulation from either in change or roll searches. Searching 1,000 pennies was a bit of a task so I'll probably stick with 10 rolls from now on. OK, on to the findings:
245 copper cents24.5% coppersix wheat penniesThe most well stocked roll for copper was 16 coins out of 50The least stocked with copper was 6 out of 50
Dates of note:
-1940 or 1948 (it was so beat up that I couldn't quite make out the last number. Looks like it spent some time on a road. Just rolled it up in the bulk copper rolls-1942-S-1946-1948-D-1951-D-1957-D-1959-D x 3
Other notes:
-As others have noted, these things are nasty. My fingers look as though I've been holding a freshly printed paper and a little oily-2010 dated cents were everywhere. I'd say around 8-10 per roll-Found quite a few 2009s. Only one was a log cabin-Copper cents seemed to have a different tone than zincs. Do these really tone different or are coppers just old enough to reach the chocolate brown color in the evolution of toning?-I need a shower now. I feel like I've been shoveling poo after searching these nasty things.

I'll update after the weekend with results , good going on yours BBN , thats outstanding copper wise.

Have fun james. This could get addictive. image I rerolled all of the zincs ready to go back to the bank and marked "Z" with a sharpie on the zinc rolls I rolled up so I don't fool with searching them again.

    It does get addictive!

One year I was so hooked I was picking up some rolls almost every day. The tellers were starting to give me strange looks wondering why I was back for more. image

I think they tone differently. I have a good track record of correctly separating them by appearance alone. It works well on the 1982's.

If you see a cent in circulation with attractive, brown toning and surfaces, there is a 99+% chance it is a copper cent. Most Zincolns just end up looking like junk. There are some dates like 1988-D and 1986-D that are more often found in attractive, smooth brown, but these are still the exception. Try putting together an attractive, brown set of circulated Zincolns together from rolls- now that is a challenge.

I was thinking that. After this search and also separating copper from zinc in my change over the last year it's almost obvious the penny will be copper before you see the date.

  • Yep , thanks for getting me back into it BBN , even the missus is on board with it when i told her the copper ones are like 3c near enough. We'll definately do it again and more often. I also forgot to mention there was 4 Canadian cents , 85,87,one has 1867-1992 and the other 1952-2002 , there was 29 2010 shield cents for anyone wondering if they circulate and 3 x LP3 and 1 LP4.

If I get some free time this week I'm going to pick up 5 bucks worth at the bank. Keep looking for wheaties and also separating the copper from the zinc as a biproduct of wheat searching. I thought about rolling up the coppers but I like the idea others have. just dumping them into a 5 gallon jug. This should keep me preoccupied from mourning the loss of the coin in my avatar. I traded it in 6 months ago for some PMs. Big regret to this day even though PMs have went up. I'll probably never seen this coin again. image

I usually do betwixt $75 - $100 a week. I never believed that it would be possible to find an Indian, but then I did last year finally. My rarest coin is the 1925 GV cent from Canada that I got later last year. I have also found several 1943 steels over the past few years. Sometime I wanna pull out all the counterstamped coins, error coins, the Indian cent, the steels etc and photograph them. I have probably gone through about 550K cents over the past four years.

    I had recently gone through $150 (15,000) worth & found approx. 20% in copper & 50+ wheats.
It's all fun, with those dirty soiled hands afterwards.

There's something i wondered about , why are as many fairly modern US cents countermarked ? At least that's what it appears to be , proffesionally punched. When i say "so many" i mean i found one and ive seen others.

BBN , im going to try and get another 10 rolls tomorrow : ) , i don't roll them either but use canvas bank bags of a good size , should hold many thousands each.Up to now it's been pocket searching but this puts that well and truly in the shade.

Bags are a good thing too. I was going to do rolls but then you have to take the time to roll and then hide them somewhere. A jug of pennies in the corner of the room doesn't look as odd. image neither would a bag which can also be tossed in a closet.

I do quite a bit of roll searching. My roll searching seems to be different from all of you however. This is what I do, I like to buy a brick or two of BU all the same date and mint coins. I look for small errors or varieties. Once found, every roll in that brick will have the same small repeatable error. Then it's off to ebay image
  • A walk in hidden attic can be a good thing , ours you'd never know it's there. One has to push aside clothing to the back of the closet , turn right and there's a door. I was amazed , never seen anything quite so cool.
I hope you get another like your avatar BBN , never say never in this game. Its when you least expect that something comes along.

I kept all my LP's in the issue boxes untouched , 4 of each and i know some of them are "hot" according to time dates stamped.I always thought..one of these days..but i doubt i'll ever open them.I'm also buying a roll of each ATB quarters from every ceremony with the stamp etc and mint wrapper , just to see if i can get one of each.Hopefully one or two errors will show up in time and i'm hoping of course i'll be sitting on a roll of them.

Just went through 17 rolls. 198 out of 850 for 23.3% copper find and four wheats dated 1955, 1945, 1951, and the one I need to fill a hole, 1952-s. I was pleased with getting that one.

    245/1000
    198/850

so far my overall copper average is 23.9%

    10/1850 wheats .054% success rate

I have to admit, I've never been a wheat person but I have had a blast doing this in free time and this kills time while I save money for coin purchases.

  • I'm set for another 10 roll search BBN , i was gonna get 20 but the Lobby was locked up for the dayand they can't put them through the drive through cos it breaks the machine , i felt fortunate the girl brought 10 out to the door for me.
TV is cack on an a tuesday , results forthcoming.

I'm impressed with your tally so far BBN , isnt it funny how one gets a wee "rush" seeing a wheatie amongst the proceedings ? image

Yup same here but I'll buy some bricks and open one or two and save the rest.

I have a $50 bag of "unsearched" cents I bought decades ago...but have never been able to stay awake long enough to get more than half-way through it. Lots of 1947s, but not much of interest on top of the pile.
  • I don't know how you can resist the temptation RWB , i only really started seriously looking now and i'm finding it addictive , my wee eyes lit up when i seen those bright red wrappers and i don't even know if i should be excited seeing that , they would seem to be somewhat older in style and appearance ?

Picked up 15 rolls today. Haven't started yet. School work had me bogged down today. I hope to get into some of it tomorrow. I won't report on coppers, but will list any wheats I find. image

  • Good luck with those BBN , the wheaties are thin on the ground for me here thus far , i'm 5 rolls in with those loose rolls and only now found my 1st.
In total over the past few weeks there's been 8 and nothing older than the 40's.I'm at 80 coppers for those 5 rolls , some mighty fine pickin image
