Unsolicited TTM - Is there a nicer ball player than Brooks Robinson?

One of my cousins over in Maryland had a baby boy last year, and like I'm sure many Orioles fans have done, they named him Brooks. We come from a large Orioles fan family! Anyway, they got to meet him at a local signing last fall, and got to snap this picture with him.

So in January my cousin thought it would be cute to contact Brooks Robinson's publicist and invite him to baby Brooks' 1st birthday party. They knew it was highly unlikely he would want to do something like that, but he actually mailed my cousins a hand-written letter, stating he had a prior obligation, and wished Brooks a happy birthday!

Well today they received this in the mail! Can you believe that? To take the time to send something like this, with a sincere message like that... it's very touching. So cool! image

Thank you for sharing that. It's always nice to hear about someone who's so talented - also being a good guy off the field.

Is there a nicer player than Brooks? You should know the answer to that - it is Cal Ripken. Never did I see a guy as generous with his time to sign every autograph possible before and after every game he played here in Detroit. And when you thanked him for his autograph, he would actually smile and chuckle a bit as if to say: "you don't need to say thanks...I enjoy doing this."

and where do you think Cal learned this?....Brooks was his favorite player as a child.......he watched closeup for years how Brooks treated people and wanted to do the same

At the HOF Induction Ceremony in 2007, I saw a little kid with a shirt on that said "My name is Calvin Brooks (last name)". Pretty cool! image

GREAT story....love it! There are some really great ball players that appreciate their fans. Guys that come to mind....(as mentioned already too) Brooks Robinson, Cal Ripken, Killebrew, Feller, Virgil Trucks, Bobby Winkles, Earl Weaver, Sparky Anderson, Duke Snider, Don Sutton, Jim Palmer, Rollie Fingers, Juan Marichal, Tony Perez, Bobby Murcer, Lee Smith, Jim Kaat, Ken Singleton, Gil McDougald, Jamie Moyer, Robin Roberts, Al Kaline, Bobby Richardson, Roy Face, Vern Law, Ralph Houk, Whitey Herzog...and thats off the top of my head...we have to be thankful for guys like this.

and I will toss in a Football player...I only know this one cuz I am as much into football as I once was and dont have the opportunity to have experiences with these guys...but Earl Campbell.

I will say that for the most part, Orioles players have been of the most friendly. Well, with the exception I think of only Eddie Murray and Steve Stone. I think you have to catch Murray on one of those "good days".

Unfortunately the list for guys who are not so friendly is much longer!

What a GREAT story! Man, there are a LOT of ballplayers who can learn from MR. 3rd Base! (And I am a NY fan!)

Three former Brown's greats who unfortunately are no longer with us were the best I ever had the pleasure of meeting, Lou Groza, Dante Lavelli and Otto Graham. I remember a show they did together years ago when my kids were toddlers and they were great with the kids....I know I have pictures somewhere with the HOF'ers...have to pull them out. al.

    Great story.

Some players are in a league all their own when it comes to class and Brooks Robinson is obviously one of them.

I should invite George Brett to my boy's b-day. I named my boy Brett after George. I told every girl I ever dated that if I were to have a boy, his name would be Brett.

As a life long O's fan I have to concur that they don't make them any better than Brooks Robinson.

Jeff, What an incredible story. Very very cool! There are very few people in this world that would have accomodated such a request in that fashion. I also liked Brooks Robinson, but he just moved up in my book. I would throw Stan Musial out there as someone that would accomodate such a request in similar fashion.

It may be a simple case of "good old days" syndrome. but has anyone noticed that 99% of the time when these stories come up they involve athletes from BEFORE the advent of Free Agency and big money? Personally, I just think that players were more grounded and more connected to the community when they were actually PART of the community - regular Joes with offseason jobs, etc.

    le sigh.....

Thanks for sharing that story Jeff. Its great to hear about a ballplayer doing something positive instead of all the negative we all hear about.

    And cheers to Brooks Robinson!!!

Great story to share. Seems like the players got more surly as they made more money. Just read the back of old baseball cards - many had jobs in the off-season.

    Awesome story!

Brooks is one of the all-time great good guys. From my IP days in the 1970s he'd talk, sign, shake hands, whatever for everyone, not just kids. As others pointed out Killebrew is right up there too. I'll add Al Kaline, and in hockey, Bobby Hull too.
