I think we should follow Okham's Razor on this and conclude that his picture is just as accurate as all the other experts, and thus Akers is in fact black & white.
Yes, David has earned our respect for his accomplishments. He has probably had better things to do than update his photo. The pic is pretty funny, though.
Reminds me of those obituary pics in the newspaper where someone in their 90's dies and theres a WWII vintage pic showing them in their uniform.

I think it's kind of like a "technical foul" in pro basketball, where the ref blows the whistle a lot and then some street thugs drop bags of money and champagne corks on the floor. Then they go to the “free throw” line and throw the ref up in the air.
Technical numismatist - the coin itself. The fabric, quality, die characteristics, colorations, strike quality, planchet variations, etc, etc, etc.
Books. His ouevre is the fountainhead of much current knowledge on many issues. Check his 20th Century gold book, gold patterns, auctions records for all gold denominations.
Put together wonderful sets and cherrypicked auctions for 30+ years banging heads with everyone in the business. Not so much concerned with the history as with the inner and outer nature of the metal of the coins themselves. Want to learn what (pre-doctoring) gold coins look, taste and smell like?
That would be the focus of a technical numismatist.
Had some luck with silver coins too.

I have his book on gold dollars, and will admit to having gotten some insight from it but all in all at this point in time it is showing its age, especially in light of more current research done by QDB (and others) and it seriously needs an updating of the auction analysis (which is a strong point of the book. the data post 1975 should be incorporporated with his existing data to update the research).
as with MOST numismatic books, they are a slice in time of the era during which they were written, and should be taken as such. No one ever has 'the last word'
Once again I observe the possibility of that some people are pissing on the heads of giants when they don't even realize they're standing on their shoulders.

If youre referring to the post I just put, please understand I realize the importance and stature of the man in this hobby but Im sure he would agree with what I just wrote about his books, and numismatic books in general.
they need updating and they are never the 'last word'

Sorry to be a grouch, but the man is one of the true giants of this century. For technical numismatists, his works are more important than QDB's.
And Jeff Bridges has gotten better-looking as he has aged, so don't go there either. He has also done some nice work.
I give away money. I collect money.

He doesn't cherrypick... Just like his classmate George Washington he just chops down the whole cherry tree!
Sorry poor old photo humor
