Question about 1921-D Morgan VAM-1X (giant cud)
 of 4-17-04 004.jpg)
I was searching around VAMworld trying to assign VAM numbers to a variety of recent purchases. Looking at the listings for the 1921-D Morgan is daunting to say the least with all the sub varieties.
I have a 1921-D with a bagillion die cracks and a reverse die break. The die break is on the reverse, triangle shaped, with die cracks around it. I have not been able to match it with any examples listed at VAMworld. The obverse is interesting in that my coin has many die cracks, including one that matches the cud location on the VAM-1X.
Any thoughts?

I used to be somebody, now I'm just a coin collector.

There's only one known VAM 1X and not likely there are more.

These are estimates by Leroy Van Allen.
R-1 Common (tems of Millions)
R-2 Not so Common (Several Million)
R-3 Scarce (Hundreds of Thousands)
R-4 Very Scarce (Tens of Thousands)
R-5 Rare (Several Thousand)
R-6 Very Rare (Several Hundred)
R-7 Extremely Rare (Few Tens)
R-8 Unique or Nearly Unique ( Several)
To say that there are only a "few tens" of VAM 3A out there is probably underestimating the number of coins that exist... maybe a few hundred? Maybe a thousand? Who knows. I just would not put too much stock in the R-7 number...
Edited to add: That coin needs to take a "dip" to get rid of all that tarnish!

Dip? Heck no. I use a wire brush, cleans them up and makes them really shinny!

Hmmm.... Case in point, I guess. That toning is colorful, but very "noisy."
