Show Report: Minneapolis--If you were there please share your experience

The show this weekend in Minneapolis ran Friday through Sunday and was sponsored by the Northwest Coin Club. Unfortunately, the show was scheduled during the ANA, so we did not have many of the out of town dealers (table and floor) that we're used to seeing. This means that wholesale selling on Friday before the show opened to the public was limited. I remember years past when there was a real buzz felt on the floor by the wholesale activity. However when the doors opened to the public on Friday afternoon, there was a very nice buzz. Most tables were 2-3 deep. The same could be said for Saturday. I was pretty busy all day Sunday as well. Most of the dealers I spoke with said they had a good show.

There was a youth auction on Sunday. I heard it was very successful. I saw a lot of nice donations on display for the auctions. The club does a very nice job with this.

I sold a very nice assortment of bullion (as expected) and collector coins. Most of the collector coins I sold were in the $50-$300 range, both raw and slabbed. I am surprised I was not offered more bullion/collector coins by the public. I was fairly near the front of the room. I was happy to have purchased a very nice 1880 NGC Prf 63 Cameo Trade Dollar from another dealer, which I think could go 64. I plan to send it for crossover, and into my personal collection it will go.

All in all, I'm very happy with the show.

I thought the show was a huge success. I was amazed at how much activity I saw on Friday. I had a hard time making my way around the room considering how many people were clogging up the aisles. This is a great sign. I feel the dealers were very customer friendly and I loved the atmosphere. I also felt there were some great treasures to be found if one spent the time looking. I love smaller shows and I love regional shows with a lot of local dealers. They really make you feel comfortable and they really make it seem like they are happy to see you there. I have been to many shows in Minneapolis and I thought this was one of the best.

I drove up for the opening Friday afternoon and enjoyed the 3 hours I had (not enough time) to check the floor for CBHs, see some friends, sell and trade a bit, and most importantly, acquire capped bust half varieties numbers 99, 100 and 101 for my collection. I'll post some photos soon. I'll be making some inquiries into having my collection reviewed by a Bust Half Nut Club member soon and making application for membership.

I also sold a Duluth National Bank Note (1908 $10 date back) to Geoman as he's opened a B&M in Duluth and I figured he might like to have the note on display in his shop.

It seemed comfortably busy at the show - a lot of people were moving silver, it seemed.

Not too many early CBHs to consider - most were late 20s and up.

It was well worth the trip!

Sounds like it was a great show, despite the conflict with the ANA show. Thanks for the report.

  • The club reported attendance exceeded 800 on Friday, and 1000 on Saturday. These are record, or near record, levels.

Most shows in the Twin Cities have been very active since November.

I too had a good show despite the absence of many of the usually early birders that attended the ANA show instead. There was interest in an assortment of areas, although notably common date '64 and earlier proof sets, which are basically now driven by bullion, and which I typically do in significant volume at a show like this, continue to sit. The more popular items sold at my table were common and somewhat better date Morgans in MS63-MS66 in the $65-$600 range and and nice, white MS64FBL and MS65FBL Franklin halves in the $50-$1000 range. I didn't put the cool toners out at this show (saving them for CSNS), although I did get some inquiries for them.

I also had a busy show. Didn't get much dealer to dealer sales, but as others have mentioned that may be due to the ANA showat the same time. However, the foot traffic from the public on both Friday and Saturday was very heavy. All my silver bullion sold (ASEs, 90%, bars and 1-oz rounds) but didn't sell a single gold piece. The hottest item on the floor were Morgan Dollars in common dates graded between MS63 - MS64. I didn't buy much, but did manage to get several 1877 IHCs for customers. Also bought a nice large-size Duluth National Note from zap1111. Overall, very busy show for me. Much better than last year.
