What would you do in this situation? (Card Show Shenanigans)

Well... It's pretty over and done with, but...

I went to a card show, opened a box of SP Authentic 2010 Football... Pulled a Suh 2 color patch auto which was my only decent hit basically.

They are always extremely nice cards, on card auto.

Basically I was walking around and a guy (Dealer) asked to see the card... I (Will never do this again btw) hand it to him, he drops it pretty instantly.
He messes up EVERY corner on the drop, basically drop bounce hit hit etc... From torso level.....

He then goes "oh sorry guess I gotta buy it off you" and proceed to offer me 1/4 of what they consistently sell for on ebay ($20, the 2 colors sell for 60-85).

I end up selling the card for $30 to the guy just because it was so mutilated at this point.... And I feel bad selling anyone a new card that looks like that.

Do you think he did it on purpose to get it super cheap or what?

I was at the show and didn't want to make a big stink... Well I REALLLYYYYY wanted to... But didn't... I'm pretty sure he should have paid full ebay price if not higher since maybe it would have been a PC card you know?

Like I said the situation is done and over...

What would you have done?

  • I guess I didn't realize that people buy boxes of cards at a show...and open them at the show.

Gotta dummy proof stuff when dealing with idiots.

Dude would have been ruined if he did something like that to me.

I had just pulled it, there really were 0 one touches at the show... So I had it between cards in the box... In another box, was pretty secure unless some idiot decided to pull what this guy did.

Ya... But when I pulled the card... I was pretty due to break even on the box (First box I've opened in probably almost 2 years, was a buddy of mine and he gave me a smoking deal at $90 for the box when they go on the bay for 100-120)....
Instead of breaking even, or probably even making a few bucks I now basically dump that down the drain.

I remember one time when I was still doing shows when some Maroon started looking over the cards I had out on the table, they were in toploads or cardsavers but he had a cup of coffee that he had hovering over the cards....and yeah it did happen, coffee went everywhere....from that point forward I didn't let anyone near my cards with any kind of beverage and/or food.....luckily none of the cards were ruined but it could have been a disaster. Made me think of the many times when I've seen folks have there cards out unprotected on tables.....al.

So, if the card was secured in the box with the other cards after you opened it, and you were walking around the show, how did the dealer know that you had the card?
  • "Hey what did you get from the box"

It's not a very uncommon question....

The sp authentic box was in a 5000 ct box I had with me for pickups

I would have accepted $30 and kept the card (I know this wasn't an option he gave you but it's what I would have wanted).

The last thing I want to do is touch other people's stuff -- if innocent, what an idiot dealer.

The dealer has xray vision and hands of stone.

    Good for you.

bet there's a greasy hot dog fingerprint on the surface, too.

it should go into the CSI baseball card data base in case he becomes a repeat offender.

I'll leave it at (Not exaggerating) the guy was probably 5 times my size...
  • in that case, then there would really be no other option then the statement above regarding dropping pants and pee'ing on his table. At that size he could not catch you. and him trying to sell pee cards would be difficult. That would get him back for sure.

You're right, the market for pee cards is pretty tough right now.

I would have looked at his stuff and asked for $60 in trade value. Or went back later and asked to see a $60 card and drop IT on the floor

Guys that are this big usually have thumbs and fingers the size of my big toe, which makes them very clumsy with cards. A good rule is to NEVER EVER let guys this big handle your cards.

  • I would have made a stink about it and demanded full value, but then again, I'm a Lions fan and would actually want an Auto Suh Rookie. I had a customer recently pull that same card and turned down $60 in trade for it.

This whole thing reminds of when I pulled a Joe Dimaggio jersey card about 10 years ago. I immediately walked over to my co-worker (18 year old girl who doesn't collect cards) and showed it to her. She asked to see it and as she looked it over, she asked how much it was worth. I answered that they were selling for $500.00 on ebay, and the shock of hearing it caused her to drop the card onto the counter. Luckily it only hit one corner and I was able to smooth it out for the most part. I still got $400.00 or so for it. Since that day, I always case my big pulls immediately.

The dealer who bought your card will probably return it to Upper Deck for a replacement. He'll say it was damaged when he opened the pack and get a minty fresh card in return for the $30.00 he spent!

I figure as much, but I know what shows he sets up at and I'll make sure to be there and ensure he either makes it right or has no sales... I'd happily get kicked out over it.

I really shouldn't offer this, since the money could wisely be spent elsewhere, BUT....

If you capture one of those two scenarios on video and post it on youtube, I'll paypal you $50. Able to do both and it's $100.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
