toned frankies covered with haze

KaelasdadKaelasdad Posts: 1,232 ✭✭✭
Saw some end roller franklins and walkers--they came out of some 40 year old rolls opened in front of a friend--one sided toners--but covered with haze as well. You could see purples and greens, golds--but then its like looking at them through dust covered glasses--on a very damaged coin, I attempted to test what acetone might do, and it subdued the haze, and the tone--what was vibrant, was now not vibrant--luckily, the coin was not a keeper to begin with. Suggestions?

could the haze have been PVC?

I'm sure someone must know what causes that haze... my quesses are either humidity (with paper as the wick) or cigarette smoke.
