1758 2 Reale - Counterfeit?

Counterfeit? I suspect it is, mass is 6.34g (should be 6.7'ish I believe). No sign of casting seam around rim and oddly enough there appears to be signs of doubling in several spots.

  • Hi Mark,
Nothing looks suspicious to me. It appears to be real and probably sea salvaged.

BTW, I'm glad you like the BWA coins!

If it's a fake, it would've fooled me.

As 8R pointed out, the roughness of the surfaces could be due to sea salvage or ground action at some point in its past life.

I can see how they'd raise a red flag to the suspicious, however.

As to it being underweight, I guess that could've happened as a result of being buried or immersed in seawater for a long time?
