Does anybody here know of a service besides NGC.......

For the kind of coin preservation service they offer? I know that PCGS doesn't have one right now.

I guess I'm talking about an individual entrepreneur who has solid experience and really understands
the various chemicals and techniques who offers that kind of service.

I have some very borderline proofs right now that could really use that kind of service and I've screwed
so many up I no longer want to try it myself.

Thanks for any comments, help....

You, my friend, are skating on the edge of asking for a coin doctor - a major topic of debate over on the Lightside forum. There are great coin doctors out there, but you will probably hear about them via PM. I honestly do not know where to draw the line between doctoring and conservation - very tough to make a statement that satisfies all cases.

For coins of substantial value, I would stick with NCS.
  • Yep.Just to be clear I'm talking mainly about the contamination of plastic or pliofilm that makes the
    fields murky, cloudy.

I know, for example, that ICCS doesn't know a coin down for it because it's practically endemic for coins stored
that way. PCGS however, seems to.

I would think removing that would be more in the line of conservation that "doctoring".

    Hopefully I'm right about that.....

Coin doctoring should not even be part of this conversation, BY definition coin doctoring is altering the surface of the coin ie. making a full face on a coin that wasn't before. REMOVAL OF CONTAMINATION, is not altering the SURFACE of the coin, it is like picking up trash off the coin. I do not know how NCS gets carbon spots off of coins without altering the surface and not call that CLEANING at a minimum. So there is room in there for wonder and discussion. Since you did not say you had Carbon Spot problems this may be out of order.image

I agree. I think PNG's recent definition, is that coin doctoring refers to all additions to a coin (fake Liberty heads, artificial toning, etc) and conservation refers to removals from a coin's surface (a quick dip to remove ugly toning, or a method to remove spots). But it's not as simple as it sounds: for example, removing hairlines by lazer is not conservation, but doctoring.

I think my friend John, that these spots have become an obsession and that you're having nightmares about them. image Another scenario, would be that you sell them and buy similar but spot free examples.

  • I appologise in advance for highjacking this thread but this is on topic. I bought this coin out of curiosity and have been wondering if anything can be done about the heavy scratch.

  • I'd be more worried about the hole in the top image
